Toyota has brought a really, really green concept with it to the SEMA Show that's currently taking place in Las Vegas. That first bit of green comes courtesy of a compressed natural gas conversion that allows the driver to switch from gasoline to CNG for the otherwise stock four cylinder engine via a button. It wouldn't be a proper SEMA concept without a ton of modifications, and so the storage tank for the natural gas is housed in the rear and appears when the modified rear tailgate is opened with its automated electric motor.

Other greenery includes the can't-miss-it Sherwin Williams green paint with metallic flakes and bronze accents. Besides its CNG system, the Yaris Tailback gets custom suicide rear doors and a custom wide body kit, necessary to cover the ridiculously wide 19x9 front and 19x11 rear wheels. Inside is custom upholstery and an audio/video system provided by Pioneer.

2009 Yaris Five-Door Tailback

Based on the all-new 2009 Toyota Yaris Five-Door Liftback, the Yaris Five-Door Tailback concept highlights functionality and youthful styling.

Functionality is emphasized through the automated rear suicide doors and rear split tailgate. The exterior features aggressively styled modifications including a custom wide body kit that enhances the front and rear fascia with a center exit exhaust, grille, and widened front and rear fender flairs that incorporate new full length side rocker panels. The custom hood and newly designed rear spoiler add to the youthful styling of the Yaris 5 Door Tailgate concept. Accompanied by the redesigned body is a set of DPE wheels that feature eleven inch wide rear wheels with a five and a half inch lip and are covered in Nitto rubber, Rotora big brake kit, and Tanabe lowering springs. Custom mixed green with gold metal flake exterior paint, provided by Sherwin Williams, further enhances the sporty styling.

The Yaris 5 Door Tailback concept also features a compressed natural gas system (CNG). As an eco-friendly tuner, this bi-fuel concept offers the ability to switch from the vehicle's combustion engine to its CNG system with the push of a button. The CNG tank and custom casing is housed in the rear of the vehicle and is unveiled as the rear tailgate is powered open.

The vehicle's interior boosts an impressive Pioneer audio/visual system. While the lower monitor displays a variety of digital gauges, both monitors have the ability to display movies and videos which can be played through the integrated iPODŽ.

The trunk area houses a custom amplifier and subwoofer casing. Additionally, custom upholstery adorns the interior with gray suede and black leather front and rear seats with yellow stitching that adds to the youthful appeal of the concept. Gray suede is carried throughout the vehicle on the headliner, sun visors, and doors. The rear seats showcase 60:40 split functionality and reclines, slides and folds flat, a feature available on the Yaris 5-Door Liftback.

sweet.. does CNG get better MPG? or does it just burn cleaner?

CNG is the cleanest combustible fossil. Though, it is highly explosive, i do not think it is a good idea to run this in a car. It is like propane, they use it on fork lifts and that is pretty much the only type of vehicle .

It's a great motor fuel, but it's low density (mostly methane) and won't get as good mileage on a volume or weight basis as gasoline. Stored under high pressure as mentioned, and it'd be tough to get refilled out on the road.

What do subwoofers, suicide doors, green paint, crazy wide tires, and auto lift tailgates have to do with an environmentally conscious vehicle?

If you have natural gas to heat your home, you can now get a kit that adds a pump ti fill up in your garage. You can then fill up at home and never have to go to the gas station, (except on long trips) Its really cheap that way also as home rates are cheaper then the stations that do carry CNG.

the home system takes a while to fill the tank, not like a normal gas pump. Althought CNG stations are about the same speed as a normal fuel fill.

Lots of pros and cons. If you compare the tank size in a CNG vehicle by the time you convert the energy from CNG to Gallons is like having a 25% less tank size. Fuel economy about the same ,but can save over a buck a "gallon " (Comparable units) by filling at home. (these are just ballpark)

Still trusting my wife to fill it up and wondering about a 3000PSI tank in the car behind me kinda detered me. Those old pinto visions come to mind. BOOM.

I still think it has its place and would like to see it catch on. It was nice to see it in a Yaris as I am tired of only seeing Civic CNG.

If the infrastructure was in place to fill it everywhere it might be nice. I would have to drive 20 miles to a station to fill up if I didnt have the home kit. For now I am very happy with my standard gas Yaris.

Just give me that tailgate :-)

I believe that there are kits available in both Europe and Australia that not only alow you to run CNG, but also still use regular gasoline. This duel fuel capability increases your travel distance from CNG station to the next.

I will bring something else up at this point, any state that charges $tax for road maintenance still requires you to pay that tax even though you tank up at home...

Looks good! Can't wait to see it installed. I'm a big fan of Roots blowers for their nice linear power and ability to make a tiny displacement engine feel much bigger.
