Strange Noise and Iffy Brakes – HELP!
Yesterday I changed out my rear shoes (drum brakes) and hardware. I noticed some brake fluid outside the right rear caliber, but I never opened the system. I’ve been monitoring my brake fluid level and it doesn’t appear to be going down. The car stops, but when I push the pedal I hear, what sounds like a swoosh of air – similar to the sound a bike pump makes when it is blown into the air. The sound appears to be coming the front of the car (I think).
Any ideas of where and what this air sound is? Also, if I saw brake fluid does this mean that the caliber is faulty? Last edited by ceilingwalker; 06-05-2010 at 11:11 AM. |

My Yaris has drum brakes in rear. Is 4 wheel disc an option?
Could a bleeder screw be lose letting fluid and air out? Last edited by bankrobber; 06-05-2010 at 11:02 AM. Reason: more info |

pinhole leak in the brake line maybe?
There was an upgrade kit for disc brakes in the rear... Garm might sell it, I think it was like $800 or so. |

I'd try to bleed the brakes properly and adjust the rears with the star wheel first, but I'll bet you tweaked the brake cylinder. The little thing inside the drum that pushes out on the brakes and has rubber dust seals on it. Flip the dust covers up and if there is brake fluid coming out of there you gotta pop it out and put the spring in correctly aligned. That or buy a new cylinder. I pulled one off completely on my corolla and had to buy a new one. On the yaris I hit it with a tool but it went back together just fine.

The air noise in the front is probably just the brake booster. As far as the leak it's probably a bad wheel cylinder, as long as it's just a little fluid I would just leave it, and keep an eye on both it, and your fluid level.

If you had any corrosion in the wheel cyls you probably ran the cups/seals over it when you changed the shoes. Just something that will happen once in a while if wheel cyls aren't replaced at the same time the shoes are. You may notice brake fluid leaking on your wheel/tire, and your brakes may tend to lock on you when you apply them.
