17"&18" rims and effects?

hi guys,
Can you please tell me how your aftermarket rims affected your performance and fuel consumption? before and after range per full tank might be an accurate reference

there is a comon belief here which says the consumption rises even if you choose a lighter alloy rim than the stock one..

you might not care how much you consume in US,but its like a nightmare here in europe although we have diesels :)

thanks in advance

My Yaris came with 17" rims, and whereas I've adjusted my fuel numbers because of it (it is a 6.75% increase in diameter, so my true mileage is 6.75% more than what my odometer shows); but they are also wider tires (almost 8.5"/215 mm versus 6.8"/175 mm) which obviously will lower gas mileage than a narrower tire.

Still, I am getting 35 MPH after two tanks (I've only had to fill it twice since buying it).

But the ride is a bit harsher than a stock Yaris (I only drove a sedan prior, but I had it for a week while on a business trip to Florida); but the wider, lower profile tires grip a lot better. I have a big curve on my way to work and I can take it 10-15 MPH faster than I could in my old car, a VW Passat wagon.

Hope that helps!

Cheers! M2

By the way, this site is great for comparing tire sizes...

My 17"x7" did not affect my FE or performance. In fact, since they're lighter than the 15" steelies, I actually picked up a little in both sections.

people say that the performance loss reaches to 10-15hp after installing 17*7s

lets try and see by myself :)

I think they are referring to the weight of 17" wheel and not the size of the wheel itself. Go for lighter weight of any size will definitely help in pick up the speed and fuel consumption category.

Just keep in mind that the weight of bigger tire usually weight more as well.

Also, heavier tire and wheel won't make you lose hp, it will only make you lose pick up speed. Once you get on the speed place like highway, then lighter and heavier wheel are not much difference except lighter one provide better stopping distance when you need to.
