5th door knob sticks

Hi all,
Whenever I tried to open the 5th door of my 2007 Yaris by pushing the metal button, the button stayed pushed in and I had to hit the black handle so that the button pops out back.

I tried to spray WD40 around the button, it helped a bit. I also popped out the small cover from inner side of the door a sprayed a bit of WD40 on the moving parts. It helped a bit as well but it is nowhere as good as it was long time ago.

I know that WD40 is not a solution to all world problems, I just wanted to check if little grease is all it needs... and I am not convinced now.

Anyone experienced the same? Is there any tired/worn out part that needs to get replaced?

Or do you think I should really take the mechanism out, clean it up properly, re-lubricate and it should solve the problem? If so, can you please kindly advise how to remove the interior plastic panel from the fifth door? The small hole in it with pop-out cover is more for emergency opening to be performed by a skilled gynecologist, but definitely not for doing proper maintenance.

Before you give up on lubricating lock, try this

Sorry about the sideways picture, I tried, but I couldn’t fix it

According to my locksmith, WD-40 just washes the grease out of the lock. WD-40 lubricate a little bit, but long-term it’s not a suitable lubricant for locks.

Locksmith told me lithium grease is the proper stuff.

Almost forgot. Every year I give all the locks on my car. A shot of this lithium grease. The doors and the ignition lock. Just a touch. If you do it late in the fall before a hard freeze, it will keep your locks from freezing all winter long.

One year I did it and a week later someone tried to superglue both my door locks. The grease prevent it. From working.

I called the cops who didn’t believe my story. When they saw the car with the locks, super glued, and the superglue running down the side of the door, they said “holy cow you’re right I’ve never seen this“

They lay and wait for the people who did that. About a month later, they caught them trying to rip the hood emblem off. (the car was a 20 year old Mercedes diesel) it was a neighbors son, who was pissed off. I parked my car in front of their house! That was 30 years ago. We are all friends now.

Thanks bronsin. Indeed, WD40 is more a cleaner than a lubricant, so proper shot of lithium grease might be helpful.
I will see if anyone has any hint how to remove the plastic cover from the 5th door so that I can get a good access to everything. There might be some gunk that needs to be removed first.

WD40...."water dryer formula 40"..it is NOT a penitrant nor is it an oil..and should pretty much be used on nothing never...tho i have found 1 good use for it and thats for "fogging" parts and engine internals to protect from moisture..its also GREAT "after run" and "clean out" for nitro RC engines

the best penitrating oils hands down are #1 Kroil #2PB blaster #3 liquid wrench

the interior hatch panel just pops off its held in by white plastic friction clips..grab a corner and pull slide fingers over to the tight spot pull some more..work around the whole thing..its held in by about a dozen clips

I will tell you for sure once I jump onto it. I am just waiting for a bit warmer weather to kick in as I do not have a workshop where the car would fit. Last time when I was working on some panel removal I damaged a lot of plastic clips. It was quite cold so I guess higher temperatures can help me preserve some more plastic parts.

your not wrong, anything below 50F is too cold for most plastics and things break easily
to put it another way...if your comfortable outside for extended periods in a tshirt and no coat your plastic will thank you

It was exceptionally warm today - 20 degrees Celsius - so I did it.
Panel removal was indeed very easy - just grabbing a corner and giving a decent short tug and the plastic clip was detached. Worked my way around and in a minute it was completely off, without a single piece of plastic broken.
Using the instructions above I managed to get the lock out and disassemble it - the inner part of the locking system was rusty aaf, so was the inner part of the bore where it is supposed to move freely.
I have cleaned what I could using a sandpaper and a wire brush, used white grease to cover everything well and re-assembled. No more sticking now, it moves almost like new!
I snapped a few pictures along the way but let me show just two of them to illustrate how the lock looks inside after 15 years of service:

double check all the "pins" came out with the panel if they didnt, remove them from the door and re-position them into the panel...#1 mistake when re-installing a panel
