2015 Yaris Hatchback 24mpg

Bought a used 2015 Yaris Hatchback, about 70k miles, brand new tires, getting 24mpg consistently driving in stop and go traffic for short distances. Is this normal, and what should I have checked out on the car? Air filters?

Thanks!

yes. its is normal. stop and go traffic is extremely bad for a car and will get the worst millage due to constant start and go.

I would tend to get new spark plugs and filters buying a used car. Also, if you leave it on defrost or foot+windshield setting on the HVAC knob, you might be constantly driving with AC on, so 24mpg isn't so surprising.

I get about 33mpg summer and 26mpg in the winter. I drive about 3 miles each way from/to work, twice a day. No traffic, just a bunch stop signs.

24 mpg? I can do better in my 2018 RAV4 LE in the city. My mom has 2015 Yaris L auto 4 door, she's getting about 29 mpg. She's 74 and only drives it in town, no highway driving at all. Her car just hit 44K miles.

Yeah check filters, maybe clean your maf sensor.

I would certainly check the maintenance records to see if everything has been serviced properly by the previous owner(s). You may wish to have a trusted Toyota dealership do a multi-point inspection and possibly a complete 70k (or by now, 75K or 80K?) service.

Hybrid 2013

I get 55-57 average MPG with my 2013 hybrid yaris. In summer ac never turned off due to living in a hot country.

My Hybrid Rav4 only gets about 28mpg... But that is in real city driving with an average speed of 20mph or less with lots of short trips.

24mpg doesn't sound right, even for stop and go. I do mixed driving, have run oversized or heavier wheels from the beginning, do not granny drive and I've never gotten below 28-29. I'm usually between 30-32. Do you carry a lot of extra weight on these short trips?

Check the spark plugs and air filter if they need replacement, additionally maybe replace the EGR? Do an engine flush/seafoam, clean throttle body?

I usually average thirty MPG. I live in California so a lot of start stop and I like to go without denting the floorboard but still moving. I have a 4dr LE auto.

Recently had a similar discussion with my brother. He bought his first car and was bamboozled by the gas that he pays for while in traffic... gotta pick your battles

Mine is always seems to get around 30 to 33 MPG!

Hi. I have a 2015 hatchy 4 door and it gets 30 to 33. I do not baby it, but I am not into putting my foot though the floor.

I just put in new spark plugs at 52k along with changing the oil and Tranny pan oil. I also drained the radiator and added a new gallon of coolant (helps keep sensors working right).

I run synthetic oil and change it when the lights indicates it (service engine soon light).

Tires are stock.

Is your oil level too high?

It could depend on your region and time of year. Also, tires.

I have an '07 hatch I bought new and I am in the Great Lakes region. In warm weather without A/C I still get about 36 mpg. In the winter months it drops to about 29 mpg.

Now, one thing I have found to make a significant difference is I air my tires up to 36 psi year round. This seems to give me a couple more mpg. When the tires are at or below 32 psi the mpg drops.
