PCV valve preventative maintenance
Is there a consensus on preventative maintenance of the 1NZ-FE PCV valve? Clean only? Replace? Never a problem, forget about it?

On 2SZ-FE I just pop it out like once a year, spray through it with brake cleaner and try to blow air through it - it should go easily one direction and it should not go at all in the opposite direction. If that is the case then it can be safely placed back.

Not worth the hassle. It's a $10 part from your local dealer. Replace it.

That's what I've always done for my Hondas. This is my first Toyota. I may just do that. We'll see. I'm trying not to break the parts bank with this car.
Do you happen to know if there is a spring in Toyota's PCV valve for the 1NZ-FE, or just a simply check valve? I'm more inclined to replace PCV valves that have a spring due to the spring relaxing with age. |

I took mine out finally. I cleaned it with brake clean. Sprayed it and let it soak in cleaner for a while (my wife will never know what that egg cup was used for). It was leaking a bit of reverse flow before cleaning. Leak free after cleaning. The service manual just says it should flow in one direction freely, not flow at all in the other direction. I'm going to leave it at that. Also, there is a spring in it. I can see it in the service manual diagram and I can tell when inspecting the physical valve. The inlet side of the valve will depress easily and spring back to its original position, if anyone cares to see for themselves.

Finally, the service manual says 27 N-M, 20 ft-lb. It also says "precoated part". Which I expect means thread sealant. So I'm reinstalling mine with Permatex High Temp thread sealant.

Don't follow that 20 ft-lb blindly. The "precoating" on the factory part is probably dry. With a liquid sealant it will be lower. I put a torque wrench on it out of curiosity. I wasn't conformortable going beyond about 15 ft-lb. It was very snug.
