Going to look at a 2007 Yaris 2DR manual Trans hatchback

Howdy all!
First post. Looking at retiring my 1995 Geo Metro. Has been a great car, but all good things must come to an end.

A dealer about an hr away has a 2007 Yaris for sale. Asking price is $4800.00. It has 106,000 miles on it. Regular title. Manual transmission. 2 Door. Hatchback.

What should I expect for an average MPG? With my 3cyl Metro (2 door hatch with manual trans) I get an average of 39-42 MPG. Most (85%) is 60 MPH highway driving.

Is there anything I should be weary of when I go look at it a second time? I'm taking a buddy of mine who is a mechanic.

When I test drove it the first time, I took it to an O'reillys and had them hook up the diagnostic as the "Check Engine" light was on. Said it was an O2 sensor. I'm fairly good with a wrench, it that an easy enough job?

The car does need new tires and has the normal wear on it. Was thinking of offering $4000 cash if it checks out. Thoughts?

Make sure that you are happy with the OEM clutch dynamics/feel, as that seems to be a major complaint among quite a few 2007-2014 manual Yaris owners (the Yaris received an updated, redesigned clutch in 2015). When it is time, you can also replace it with a better aftermarket clutch to improve the feel/dynamics, if you wish.

Also, check for pink stains on underside of hood, since the earlier Yaris models had some water-pump premature-death issues, and would often give warning that they were going out via the leakage.

Based on our market up here, I'd say $4000 is at the very upper end of the price range.

Thanks for the info. One the initial test drive I did notice the BIG difference as to how my Metro clutch felt vs the Yaris. I was doing a LOT of revving unintentionally. I figured that if I bought it, I'd get used to it. I did read a few posts here that discuss the revving and the RPMs "hanging" after you let off the accelerator. All of which I noticed on my test drive.

I will also check under the hood for the traces of a weak water pump.

Thanks for the input. I KBB'd it and saw the "Fair" value here in Iowa was $4200-$5000. If the 2nd test goes well, considering it needs new tires and the O2 sensor, I'll open at $4000 and go as high as $4200.

There are really 4 things you need to focus on as possible issues with the '07, other than insuring all recalls have been performed.

How many miles did you get on the Metro? I had a 91 Festiva and sure do miss that car. Driving a 15 Yaris SE now. I'm sure the 91 Ford Festiva is still going strong.

BLKHILLSGUY, My current Metro has 190,000 on it. Runs great, just the body is wearing out. Before that I had another Metro that I gave up on after hitting the 3rd deer. I figured it was cursed!

Funny you should mention a Festiva! My 2 cars previous cars were both Festivas. a 1991 & 1993. They were great cars!

I got the car purchased Friday. Including installing a brand new set of tires, I paid $4400.00. According to KBB.com, I did well. I'll be spending a LOT of time here learning about simple modifications I can make to increase MPG.

I need to start out by putting a stock style muffler back on the car. Not that doing that will increase MPG, I just don't want a car that sounds like a chainsaw. I also noticed that one or two of the splash guards were broken or missing. And I also need to replace the O2 sensor and make sure the plugs and what not are good.

I bought my 2007 Yaris LE Hatch in August 2014, with 116000km, great shape, came with 2 sets of good tires and was rather meticulously maintained by the previous owners, was driven by a few daughters going to med school, kept up by their doctor parents. :P To this day, still runs like a top, 123300km or so on it, not a single issue, only done basic maintenance. Between the value of it, fuel mileage and reliability, even my father and his $30000 Civic is more fond of my little Yaris! Considering buying a friends Celica GT-Four ST205 for a car to play around with on the side, but pretty much nothing could convince me to give up my lil' Yaris, planning on keeping it as long as it can live!

looks nice shape for sure,5 Speed?.Body is everything as once the body goes thats pretty much it in my opinion.Mechanical is nothing as a part can just be swapped out.I cant believe how I really never noticed how good Yaris's look untill owning one.The body style is beautiful and simple.Its horrid what they have done to the new civics.Know I am having the windows tinted and getting some summer alumnium rims.Just got to find a good place to buy locally.

Being the second highest per-capita urban center of Yaris owners in Canada, it's about time Moncton represented. I'll have to keep an eye out for that plate this summer.

Definitely! There's a surprisingly large amount of them around Moncton, looked for ages for a good one to buy, never seen any anywhere, finally got my hands on one and suddenly I see them everywhere! I'm sure if you're around the Moncton area you'll see me driving around somewhere!

Thank you! Totally have to agree, know a few folks with the older Echo's and Yaris' sharing the 1NZ-FE platform and auto pushing around 400000-600000km, as far as I see, reliable and plenty peppy around town!
