Break-In Period.
How long / far is the break-in period for these cars?
You're not supposed to drive at constant speeds during break-in period, right? Does not mean, no highway / cruise control driving and no coasting during the break-in period? |

It's listed in the owner's manual about Break-In period.

page 178/618: Break−in period Drive gently and avoid high speeds. Your vehicle does not need an elaborate break−in. But following a few simple tips for the first 1600 km (1000 miles) can add to the future economy and long life of your vehicle: Avoid full throttle acceleration when starting and driving. Avoid racing the engine. Try to avoid hard stops during the first 300 km (200 miles). Do not drive slowly with the manual transmission in a high gear. Do not drive for a long time at any single speed, either fast or slow. Do not tow a trailer during the first 800 km (500 miles).

Thanks. I don't remember seeing it in my '07's manual. The '09 doesn't come with a full manual like the '07 did.
So which is it? The way mentioned in the manual or the way posted in floydisrock's link? |

So if we follow the owner's manual, we shouldn't be using the cruise control for the first 1000 miles...

Steady speeds for long periods are not good during the break-in period. Try to vary the speed a lot; speed up & slow down. The purpose is to load & unload the rings and apply different kinds of loads on all the other parts.
A spirited drive down a country road is just right, but don't run the piss out of it (despite what Mr. Mototune says). One thing I do agree with Mr. Mototune about is changing the oil early & often. Breaking in an engine right can be a lot of work... Everyone seems to have an opinion, this is just mine. |
