Relay Wiring for DIY LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
So we all know how to easily disable the DRLs if we have them. But I actually want to add some LED DRLs and all I've been able to find so far is the DRL-1 product from Webelectric.
So my question to Yarisworld (& CTScott) is - if I hook up two SPDT relays in series per the attached drawing ... will it work? And if it will work ... do I need to be concerned that I'm running a coil off the same line that's power my headlights? Basically, I'm running the power to the DRLs through the series connected relays - and if either Hi or Lo beam is active, the energized coil will break the circuit supplying power to said DRLs.

Here's a one relay method - My headlights off with the ignition switch DIY. With it you can just leave your headlight switch on all of the time:
http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14427 If you want the LEDs instead of the headlights as DRLs, your method is fine. Just use the ignition switched power from my DIY for the 12V feed for yours.

So I went out to the car with a multimeter and the electrical wiring diagram for the '07 Yaris and I think I figured out where I need to tie in with splices.
Please take a look and tell me what you think.

zuberio, you could also use a single relay in that setup with 2 diodes. If you put a diode on each "low" and "high" signal wire, then both into the #86 terminal on the relay. But I think it would come down to what parts you have or want to purchase.
Either way, I'll be watching to see what you use for your LED DRLs! |

And to answer your question, here's what I'm using for the LED DRLs. I'm about 50% done with the wiring .... I just discovered Scotchlok connectors and ordered some off Amazon to make my life easier. I'll post pictures when everything is installed and running :)

Yeah, the Scotchlocks or T-Taps are amazing. I switched over to the T-Taps for this car. Makes life so much easier! |

If I want only Lo Beams to turn off DRL, would I just wire the relay like as pictured in (Lo)?

Cool man! but how did you mount the DRLs on your bumper? Any pic or a DIY on them?

They're peel-n-stick :) Just had to drill a small 1/8" hole at one end of each strip for the wire and then just stuck them on.

Thanks for the idea zuberio -- nice work!
I recently installed an HID kit but now missing the DRLs since I had to disconnect the relay underneath the dash. I'd like to get the DRLs back therefore I plan to do this relay DIY to my hatchback, but the difference is I just want to use the existing parking lights inside the headlights as the DRL lights (see pic below). I'm going to be replacing the bulbs with the brightest/white 194's LED that I can find to make them more visible in daytime. I've searched the forums but had difficulties finding the info... Do you have a link where I can find the hatchback headlights wiring diagram so I can splice the hi/lo signal source to the relay? thanks! -toy .
