Toyota Announces Safety Recall on Select Vehicles

Torrance, Calif., January 28, 2009 – – Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. will launch a Safety Recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involving approximately 134,900 Yaris vehicles sold in the United States.

The Yaris is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners that retract the seat belts to begin absorbing the occupant’s forward momentum when a severe frontal impact is detected. On 2006 through 2007 model year Yaris, Toyota has determined that the seat belt pretensioner deployment may affect the sound insulating foam in the center pillar, following a collision.

There are no reported cases of this condition in the United States and no other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved.

Toyota will inform owners of the involved vehicles with a Safety Recall notification via first-class mail beginning in early February. Owners are requested to contact their local Toyota dealer for repair. The repair will take approximately one hour, depending on the dealer’s workload.

Customers with questions or concerns should contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
So my 2008 HB is not affected. Sweet! But what about the exhaust recall?

Cheers! M2

Hi

I work at a Toyota dealership in Denmark and there has only been 3 incidents with the seat belts fireing up the car by collision worldwide.

I haven´t got any info on the exhaust, so maybe that´s not in the Danish market, but they rapported it in the radio.

Regards Steven.

here's more input . www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28891251 . Cars manufactured JANUARY 25th > APRIL 2008 . Figures , quite sure both our '08s were built in that period of time . Makes me think if those with rough idling YARIS might be due to the defective E.G.R. . . Or defective motor mounts ? Or other . . TOYOTA is getting to big for their britches . More about quantity than quality . Think they'd learn something from the AMERICAN car manufacturers dilemma . Partly from poor reliability .

Okay I kinda see what the deal is with the insulation foam catching fire, but anyone know what the exhaust recall is all about?

I've talked to several '07 YARIS owners who said they could smell exhaust within the cabin of the car . This could be due to the broken E.G.R. pipe that's mentioned in the RECALL . This may make the car run poorly as well ( rough idle ? ) . Plan to call several TOYOTA service centers on this issue . There's also a toll free phone number to call : 1-800-331-4331 . I'll report back with my findings .

oh %^&* my car is definitely in this recall thing. I hate it, doing to much to it, and i got all kind of stuffs in it.
So how long do you expect to receive a recall letter from them? can you call any dealers to check?

called several service centers and said defective E.G.R could cause rough engine idle . Think we may have to take the sedan in for a physical .

anything is possible . Take it in and make copy of the recall info from www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28891251/ to present to them in service department . Should be inspected for free . Hope this helps . Good Luck .
