The numbers look bad. Car sales are one of the indicators for the economy. I don't think there will be a recovery soon. California is looking at $24 billion deficit and declining tax revenues.

There are several driving factors...

Right now the national average of gas is $2.52/gal; a year ago it was $3.93/gal (Source)! That alone would easily explain why sub-compacts were in a greater demand; but another consideration is that the economy wasn't as bad a year ago as it is now.

Watch, I bet as gas prices increase more (thanks OPEC!) and the economy tanks even more; smaller, more fuel efficient and less costly cars like the Yaris will become big sellers!

Cheers! M2

I notice Yaris sales in my area have increase compared to February when I bought my Yaris. Gas is near $3.00 a gallon for regular in a few places around town. Most stations seem to be around $2.80 a gallon for now.

Wow, and I thought $2.39/gal--what we are paying here in Texas--was bad...

But that is still almost a dollar more than what we paying at the start of the year.

Cheers! M2

It's around $2.46 at the cheap stations here now. Back around Christmas I saw $1.25 at several. Basically doubled in less than 6 months. I'm not happy about the rising price, but I anticipated that happening.
