My Yaris helped me save a life.

In all honesty, there really wasn't much I could have done. I was driving back to work from my break when I witnessed a young lady collapse in front of the entrance. After I made sure traffic was clear I sped up and used my Yaris to block pedestrian traffic so local EMS could have easy access to the young lady. I got out and it turns out she was having a seizure. I got permission from her boyfriend to help her out. All I really could do was get her into the recovery position until the she was past the tonic clonic state. She was pretty agitated when she was in the postictal state. By that time the paramedics showed up. I transferred the care of the patient to the paramedics, and went back to work.

Gotta say it was a good feeling to help another person. I haven't felt that since I left my previous job as an EMT.

thumb up for the help!

I have yet to witness someone helping out like that. People here live pretty much like NYC or Paris. If you ever fall down, God helps you. nobody else will. -_-

Be careful, though, in California, the Good Samaritan law is no more. That means that if you try to help someone in difficulty and your helping causes them harm, they can turn around and sue you. Yup.

http://firstaid.about.com/b/2008/12/...samaritans.htm

I guess now you're supposed to do nothing and call 911 instead?? Beware. Google "good samaritan law " for your state to see if that applies to where you live, and also if they make exceptions for certain professions (medics, etc) and certain situations.

I bet some people (like the OP) still do what they feel is right in an emergency situation, but they're no longer protected by the law, or not always.

I'm a licensed and trained EMT in Los Angeles County. I didn't do anything outside my scope of practice. I appreciate the word of warning. I guess a disclaimer is in order.

If you're going to help someone make sure you know what the hell you are doing and be prepared for any consequences.

yup. that's all I meant

Personally, I think the good samaritan law has turned stupid, if you want my opinion, but I guess it's better to warn people who don't know any better.

No no no ... he just did it because it was young lady people!

Then the boyfriend showed up and he was thinking in his head, "ah crap, should have kept on driving!"

Ok, ok, ok

On a serious note ... That's awesome man. It sucks that not everyone would do that because "they don't know what do do." I mean if a person just clears out room for the injured so that tha paramedics can come in easily like what you did, they have done just as much to help and save a life. Kudos bro!

Helping someone is easy as ABC. Airway Breathing and Circulation. Those things take priority in that order. I encourage everyone to be atleast certified in basic first aid and cpr.

That's a real good idea, actually.

I sometimes worry that when the BIG ONE hits in California we'll be helpless because there won't be enough people who know basic first aid (well, among other things)
