MPG in my sedan
So my 4 door sedan has been running a Scangauge II since Christmas, and I must admit it's awesome.
It's calibrated and accurate to what I belive is correct (11gallon tank / 1.5 liter) and offset of 2.9. I'm pulling 41-43 mpg highway when I'm doing 58-60mph. Is this good or is my gauge blowing smoke... |

For the Winter that is good. Summer it would be bad.

Thanks for the heads up.
Also curious on a few things. When my engine is warm it's always 181 degrees Fahrenheit. Is yours the same? Ever get 50MPG highway (completely flat). I've noticed with my Scangauge II that even the SLIGHTEST incline I drop mpg, I can't believe how sensitive this thing is. |

During the warm months it is easy to get 50+ MPG on the highway. Just stick to 55 MPH rather than 58-60 and keep your tire pressures at least at max sidewall. It sounds like you're off to a great start, but check out the stickies in this forum for some more efficiency tricks and ideas.

I think the nominal thermostat opening temperature is 184 F. They're not high precision devices, and open gradually over a range of temps, not all at once. In warmer weather it'd likely settle somewhere above the thermostat temp and fluctuate with engine load and vehicle speed.

That's awesome. I still can't break into the 50's again. When ever I enter city driving, my AFE drops from mid to high 40's into the high 30's or low 40's. Arrrgh.

my water temp swings from 184-188 fairly easy.... in the summer months I can often peak in the 190's without pushing the car hard.
40 on the highway is good... tho I think it really all comes down to where you live. Type of gas (ethanol or not, oxygenated or not) flat or hilly, windy or calm, rainy or dry, they all have effects of the mpg's.... I'd also guess that living in a higher altitude would be better due to less oxygen effecting the fuel mixture... and thus not using as much gas compared to somebody driving around at sea level. |

I don't think there would be any difference... the concentration of oxygen is the same at high elevation and at the sea level, it's just the air pressure is lower at the higher elevation.

That instant mpg gauge on the Scangauge is a good reference but its tendency to be all over the place all the time gets a bit distracting so i used the X gauge feature to program in an average mpg reading, i've posted this before and find it easier to follow than the instructions in the book= =
