RPMs high when cold, not switching gears
Is just specific to my automatic Yaris or is this a global phenomena. When I start out driving after the car sits for a while, it revs quite high and seems like it doesn't want to come out of gear. The "cool" light is on and it is usually until this goes away that the car actually goes back to normal and the RPMs are normal. This has been a little more evident of course now in the colder weather, but it was like this in the summer too. I can't remember other cars doing this in the past, but maybe it's something to get used to in the Yaris.
Any ideas or anyone else experience this? |

this is a normal thing for must automatics (cars atleast). Unless your talking about 5-6k range; inwhich case I would relax the gas pedelle a bit.
Another solution would be to start your car like 5-10mins before you go to leave; and this way it'll be all toasty warm and what not

Yep, all automatics do this. It's probably more efficient to run the car at higher rpm to reach optimum temperature before lowering the engine speed.

Yea, there have been a couple people on here..namely myself...who have gotten real worked up about high revs and sticking in second gear--sometimes not even seeming to accelerate properly. Alot of people seem to have this problem.
Also, dont listen to that guy who said to rev your engine high to warm it up...lol. As to the 5-6 k range...how can we know WE DONT HAVE A TACH TO CHECK IT. i wouldnt really care about the tach at all if it werent for the sticky gears in cold wheather. Also, expect gas mileage to decrease the more you have this problem. |

We have a stick-shift, but I LOVE our ScanGaugeII and knowing the actual TEMP of the engine in cold weather, as well as the RPM when I elect to play around a bit.
Mileage computation is pretty accurate, too.

Yep.. The A/T stays in low gears until the "cool" light goes out. It turn off when the engine coolant temp reaches 130F.

Yea... I guess it would help the engine get to operating temperature faster on the cold days.
Until I put 2 & 2 together, I thought there may be a problem but it is engineered into the car. |
