DIY Cruise Control for 2012 Yaris - Good News!

I recently obtained the wiring diagrams for the 2012 Yaris. Much of the wiring and connectors remain the same as the second generation Yaris. This is the case for cruise control, so 2012 Yaris owners can DIY cruise control using the same OEM stalk.

For the 2012 the wiring is the same as that of the 2009-2011 Yaris, where the wiring from the ECM to the steering column is (theoretically) there. Also, the 2012 Yaris has the cruise control "On" and "Set" indicators built into the instrument cluster.

For those with the steering wheel audio controls the spiral cable connector, under the airbag, is a 10 pin connector, instead of a 4 pin connector (like those without steering audio controls and that of the 2006-2011 Yaris).

Those with the audio controls will need to transfer the two cruise control pins (in positions 1 and 2) from the 4 pin cruise control stalk wire to their 10 pin spiral cable connector (in positions 1 and 2).

The procedure for removing the steering wheel airbag is a little different for the 2012, where three clips secure the airbag to the steering wheel (rather than 2 screws like the 2006-2011 Yaris).

Also, for the 2012, the lower steering wheel cover has a separate removable cover section for where the cruise stalk goes through, called the "lower no. 2 steering wheel cover"

If someone from the Connecticut area is interested in adding cruise control to their 2012 Yaris, I have the parts and would be more than willing to help to give me the opportunity to document the process and update my Cruise Control DIY.

Below is the link to my DIY for 2006-2011 US and Canadian Yaris. For the second generation Yaris it was very easy to add cruise control to US and Canadian Yaris, since the ECM had the function built in.

For European Yaris it was not built in, so a complete aftermarket system was necessary. My understanding for the new third generation European Yaris is that cruise control is now an option.

The cc mod on my 09 Yaris is still going strong! Plus I get chops when I tell people cc is built into the ECM.

I just bought a 2001 Corvette and of course it has the stalk cc.

I much prefer the four buttons on my dash on the Yaris!

Hello, this is my first post here in yaris world. I just purchased a 2012 yaris. I dont have any radio buttons on the steering wheel. I assume I have the 4 pin connector, so everything should plug in and work? Also, where do I get the parts to do the cruise control mod?

I have the stalk with wiring and mounting screws available for $40 shipped. I shipped a set to mr9865 on here, but he just picked his 2012 up yesterday, so I don't think he's gotten around to testing it out yet.

Hopefully you have a camera handy with decent macro capability, so we can document the 2012 install.

If you pop off the little cover on the side of the steering wheel, you should be able to take a peek inside to get a better feel for where the clips are.

Sounds pretty straight forward:

-Disconnect the battery for 30 min before touching anything
-Remove the steering wheel side cover
-Pop off the 3 air-bag clips(if you disconnect the airbag I think the ABS light will turn on)
-Connect and install the cruise control stalk to the 4 pin connector
--If you have steering wheel controls for the radio then transfer the 2 wires from the cruise stalk to the 10 pin connector
-Put everything together and cross your fingers

Indeed. the tricky thing is just figuring out the airbag removal, as it is different from the 2nd gen Yaris, with the clips instead of screws.

With the light piece that you mentioned above, I think you meant SRS, not ABS light. But, if you disconnect and reconnect the airbag connectors with the battery disconnected the SRS will not log a DTC and turn the light on. If you were to do it with power, or connect the battery to test the cruise before reconnecting the airbag, then you would get the SRS light.

Good to know.
Also, I was looking at the steering wheel yesterday and I think the clips just hold it in place, and all you need to do is pull the thing straight out.

I think that the clips are holding against a groove in a plastic rod. This is the only other image from the service manual, and it looks like those three plastic rods are positioned where the other image shows to press the clips:

Its just that the base airbag is a little different than the one in your diagrams
