Yaris 2009 vs 2012
I've decided to become a Yaris owner, but due to really long delivery times I started looking at demo-models / slightly used models of which there are some.
However in my search I stumbled upon a 2009 Yaris which seems to be a real bargain so I came to thinking: What are the major differences between the 2009 and 2012 diesel Yaris besides the obvious (design, better mileage, Toyota Touch)? |

You are in a special area. Here in the US, we read about diesel engines for Yaris. I suspect if the engine size is the same, the only difference would be transmission and the new design of the Yaris. The car is basically the same from year to year and the 2012 isn't total redesign, just a cosmetic redesign of the dash and some sheet metal.
I suppose some gearhead will prove me wrong, but overall I don't think there is much difference based on my perception of the US Yaris changes.

One is older and the other is younger with a fresh new look. Apart from that the 2012 stance is lowered at the rear. It's wider and has more boot/cargo storage at the back. The engine and tranny are probably the same.Using the D-4D diesel engine. I saw one video or review of the 2012.The rear occupants lose some head room because the pillar is not like the 2 Generation bubble shape, it slopes down. Also you will notice less storage compartments in the dash. The 2009 had a lot of cubby holes to store items in, the 2012 does not.The rear seats do not slide or recline apparently.

They (the Danes and other Europeans) also essentially get their choice between NEW 2nd and 3rd Gen Yari because the 2nd Gen Yari is the Daihatsu Charade there until Toyota pulls Daihatsu out of the European market (Toyota owns 51% of Daihatsu).

The diesel-engines has always been a regular part of pretty much any car-series, but I would be willing to give that up in a heartbeat if we could lower the taxes on cars...
In Denmark we pay 180% (yes - thats one-eighty) in taxes when buying a car thus meaning that the cheapest Yaris a 1.0 TL (the step before T1) costs 120.000 dkr = $20.700 Another aspect is we only get T1 and T2 models for most of the cars however on a few of the bigger models it is possible to get T3 and for the Avensis even T4... A Landcruiser D-4D 3.0 T3 costs $166.500 and the Avensis T4 D-CAT is $90.500 But all available in diesel :-) After much carefull reading I've come to the conclusion that there is no reason to buy an outdated model. The new one gets better mileage and has better brakes as well as a higher NCAP-rating. But thanks a bunch for the input. |
