Converting Toyota Yaris 2007 1.3liter manual to automatic

Hello,

If I want to convert my Yaris to an automatic gear, would it be advisable or harmful to the engine?
Would it be cheaper to buy another car rather?

I am in the process of converting a 1.5L from manual to auto myself.

Besides the tranny you would also need the shifter and shifter cable, rear engine/tranny mount, wiring harness (or the 3 connectors that are different for the auto and 19 ECM pins), and the ECM from an auto.

In most markets the same engine is available both with a manual and an auto, so there are no worries about doing damage to the engine. The auto is heavier and you may find that it feels a bit slower with the auto, as it decides when to shift.

I'm double minded about the conversion. Its abit annoying to change gears in traffic lol.

I wonder as well. I can think of a number of good reasons why CTScott would decide to do a conversion, but I can't understand why someone with one car would want to convert a manual to an automatic. If someone has a commute that is so long and congested that it is driving them crazy to drive it with a manual transmission, why would they want to 'disrupt' a car that has been reliable and possibly introduce even more stress into the situation? Perhaps I just don't understand how irritating a manual in traffic can be to some people.

I bought a 2007 that I am rebuilding for a friend. It had bad synchros on the MT, so I planned on swapping in a junkyard tranny. Since his wife and daughter will also be driving the car (and neither has ever driven MT), I figured that I might as well put in an AT instead of a MT.

honestly if I didn't despise how badly the slushbox makes the car feel if I were to get another one just to be a commuter I would go with the slushbox. To me the C50 seems a bit anemic for even the 1nz. I was already having mine showing signs of issues before I went boosted even at only 40k miles.

I have driven many auto cars including BMW, Mercedes, Jeep, Chev and Ford and my opinion is that the auto on the Yaris is particularly frustrating and feels old tech compared to modern auto boxes found on other cars. At times it does not do what you expect it to (e.g. it changes up when you near the the crest of a hill, but usually does it too early, so the car slows down forcing you to kick it into a lower gear to prevent frustrating the traffic behind. I have also seen it gear down one gear lower than it should have when coasting downhill) I am sharing my experience in the 1.3; perhaps the AT is better matched to the torquier 1.5.

I have no problems with the shift points on my Yaris auto transmission, and if I am not happy with they way it is handling a particular section of road I can always manually shift through the gears myself. That doesn't happen often but on occasion I like to rev up the 1.5 a little more so I shift it down to '3' until I want it to shift up.

Downhill the DFCO kicks in and does well enough to engine brake the car as well as saving fuel.

Cheers! M2
