No really, I assume you're speaking of the annoying loud whining sound that comes from the transaxle? If so, it's normal, but I hate it too.. I just coast out of my driveway.. I hate actually having to back up. |

Reverse gear uses "straight cut" or "dog box" gear which makes more "gear whine" Most pedestrians are familiar with the sound and will look for a car reversing when hearing this

It comes from the gearbox, at least for those who have manual transmission.
Guys chill out and enjoy your car!

The rattles are from the toque of the engine pulling against the exhaust system. In drive it pushes against and there is no rattling.

this is kinda related. when i sit on concrete it reflects the sound of the trans and engine back better and i hear a loud chirping noise when idling in first. is that normal???? im also sitting next to a wall so that better moves the sound towards me.

when i first got my yaris it made a loud vibrating noise when backing up, sounded like it was coming from underneath the hood. took it to my dealer and it was a hose that was vibrating against the firewall, they tied it up and bam, i'm back in business. hope this helps.

I've had my car for 5000miles I don't here the reverse anymore but in gear idling I can hear a squeal. And how do u get the dipstick out for the tranny. The damn thing won't come off.

Yeah, when I put it in reverse, there's a funny clanky sound, coming I think from the engine compartment. Automatic transmission. Sounds like a washtub being repeatedly hit lightly with a drumstick or something. Gets a little louder when applying some gas in reverse. Only in reverse, not the slightest hint of it in "Drive". So, there's no known fix?

I think I have seen this problem mentioned before here or in other threads.
I hear the same noise every now and then when I back the car. I mentioned it to the technician when I took the car to the dealership for service the last time and he did not say anything constructive. Obviously he has not fixed the problem because I still hear the sound sometimes. I understand that several members have heard the same rattling sound and some even seem to have had the source identified. I have to assume that it is harmless, at least for the short term. I will mention it again the next time I speak to the service people. |

Yeah, me too. I got a free oil change @5000 miles, so I told them about it. When I picked-up the car, there was no mention of it in writing or in our conversation, and in the shuffle, I kinda forgot about it too, till later when it was too late and I was gone from there.
Yeah, I seriously think there's not enough energy in it to cause damage, since it only happens in reverse gear. Just annoying a little and can be embarrassing. |

Ooooh, I just came up with a better description of the sound > replace the above washtub with a cowbell, like the sound you hear the locals make during a european downhill skiing run. Yeah, that's it...
