"Klunk!" One Time Noise When Backing Up
Hi everyone, this is my first post. I got my 07 red Yaris sedan last week. It has A/T
Every time (I even noticed that at the dealership) I start the engine and start to back up from my driveway, I always hear that one-time "klunk" noise (for a lack of better description). It only happens once after the engine is started, and it wont happen again until the next time I start the car again. My first guess is something to do with the transmission??? |

if it happens again and again. Take it to dealership or Transmission shop.

I can confirm this, I own a 07 Hatchback LE Auto, and I can hear this "klunk" noise you described here, it's very faint, if you don't pay attention to it it's hardly noticeable. I hear it almost everytime when I back out of my driveway, I only hears it once, and won't hear it again for the rest of the drive. I think it also happens when I go forward too.
I took it to the dealer once, but couldn't replicate the problem to the technician. I have figured out now if I shut off the engine and wait a while, then restart the engine and move the car, it will produce that "klunk" sound. Well at least now I know it's not just my car, though I really hope this is not a serious issue. |

there seems to be such a clunk when i throw my car into reverse (manual transmition) after starting it.
ive not worried about it though, figured it might be nothing or not that unusal. it ONLY happens when going into reverse after starting the car.

well for the auto matics, its from parking on any slite slope, any surface thats not level, and not using your emergency brake to hold the car, but relying on the tranny to hold the car...

I'm interested to find out more about why brake pads/shims shifting can cause this "klunk" sound. |

because they can shift, theres enough space to make a bit of noise. i have used brake lube on the shims and inserts on highlanders, corolla's, tc's, camry's, avalons, rav4's...and so on from this complaint. |

Our Saturn used to do that too. It is the brake pads, don't worry about the noise at all. The brake pads have to move inside the caliper, otherwise how would the brakes work. Sometimes there is just more room for play, but the pads will never come out or fall out of place in any way. You're perfectly fine.

Would the brake lube be included on a brake cleaning/adjustment at the dealer? |

Thanks for the replies. I will have them look at it next time I'm in. I've been changing my own oil since the first two changes. Was wondering if I missed anything in all the lost post about this.

I seem to recall a post about the ABS resetting causing such a noise.

this may be your front pad(s) , our '08 Liftback does this . I'm quite sure it's the front pad on the drivers side , due to the way it's seated . Is annoying . These cars have a lot of quirks .
