Used Yaris: 2011/previous vs 2012/later

Hi all, it is fantastic to have an whole forum about Yaris.
Looking to buy a used Yaris for my wife to commute to work, around 10 miles per day.

I would like to go with a 4cyl 1.5L Petrol as I think in the long terms does better than the 1.3L.

I saw the 2012 series had a bit of improvement on design and also changed the engine (from NCP91R to NCP131R). Should I stick with the older models or the new ones are good too?

I read on the forum I should stay away from 2007/2008 models (peeling and few issues on the 2008). I am based in Australia, I assume the series are the same?

For example this car doesn`t look bad to me:

but obviously I am expecting he issues listed on the forum.

When is supposed the timing belt to be changed?

Thanks all.

The 4 cylinder 1.5 petrol engine (1NZ-FE) is the same, only the design changed which is why the designation changed from NCP91 to NCP131. (I don't know what the added "R" is in Australia). However, the link you provided is a sedan model which is NCP93. The timing "belt" is actually a timing chain. I don't know the change interval though timing chains don't have to be change as often as a timing belts.

Thanks Yarisugi. I saw there is roughly 20% difference in price between 2008, 2010 and 2012 used models (same specs and mileage). Last WE I have inspected a 2012 full optional that I liked but I didn`t place any offer due to few people saying it was better to stick to the older models due to quality issues with the new ones. Should I go with a 2009/2010 and save a bit of money?

If anything, the 2007-2008 have the most known issues (weak clear-coating, water pump, ABS sensor corrosion, rusting bolts on control arms, etc.), which were eventually corrected on subsequent model-year refreshes/face-lifts. Some of those issues, however, only really manifest themselves in snowy/salty/wet areas.

The only new issue that I know of on some of the 2012-2014 versions was the chrome-plated garnish piece on the rear of car having an odd chemical reaction with the painted surface of hatch lid, causing some rust in that area around the garnish piece.

Either way, any year Yaris is the most reliable subcompact in the world, overall. Reasonably take care of it, and it will take care of you.

So it looks like the 2010-2011 models are the sweet g-spots!

Is the 2009 still part of the 2007/2008 serie? I am struggling to find a yaris within my budget which is not a 2007/2008 model. Could the known issues still exist if after 9/10 years or I am now in a sort of safe zone?

^^^ The few "known issues" with 06-08 models are relatively rare and rather insignificant. I drove my 2007 until almost 100K miles with no mechanical issues whatsoever... which is most common among all Yaris owners. However, I did have some clear coat issues on the roof last year before I sold it.

Find an early model with good paint and get it thoroughly checked out at your local Toyota dealership. If it comes back with a clean report, you should be good to go.
