Subwoofer Help
Hi guys,
My dual 10" ported setup recently gave up on me (pre built) xXX brand (pretty crappy) so I decided to buy two new subs. I didn't appreciate how much space the the dual 10" setup took in my tiny little yaris so I opted for dual 8" kicker subs this time. My question is, What type of enclosure should I go for? Subwoofer Features: 8" Single 2 Ohm Competition (Comp) Series Subwoofer Power Handling: Peak: 200 watts RMS: 100 watts Impedance: Single 2 ohm Injection molded SoloKon cone Optimized polyfoam ribbed surround Extremely rigid cone, along with 360 degree back bracing eliminates distortion Double stitched surround for enhanced durability Tinsel leads woven into the spider with Kicker's Spiralead technology Single high-temperature voice coil 45oz. Magnet structure Frequency response: 30-500 Hz Sensitivity: 85.6 dB Mounting depth: 4-1/16" http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...C82-10C82.html Recommended Enclosure Specifications Recommended Enclosure Type Ported / Vented Sealed Minimum Sealed Box Volume 0.5 cubic feet Maximum Sealed Box Volume 1.2 cubic feet Minimum Ported Box Volume 0.66 cubic feet Maximum Ported Box Volume 1.2 cubic feet When I build the enclosure, do I just double the above values since I am using two subs? |

You could do a single 12 inch. I've got a Morel 10" I run. I made the box, but Morel needs a cubic foot for there 10", so in my hatch back I made the box 12.5x12.5x15.5 The long end is front to back, so I still have lots of room(2/3)in the cargo area.
Anyway, most 12's work well in a 1 cubic foot box. A 12 in a good sealed box can equal 2 10's. Good luck.

One red flag that I see is the same values given for the airspace on the sealed and ported maximum allowable sizes...
You should note that building a sealed enclosure is going to be easier, more controlable and more reliable overall versus an attempt at a poerted/vented enclosure. I'm not saying don't attempt the ported type, just do your research on port size, length vs tuning frequency. You'll be able to save a heck of a lot more room in your Yaris with a sealed enclosure if that's a concern. What amplifier is going to be driving the speakers?

I already bought the Subs from the US & got them delivered so a new sub is out of the question.
I intend to use my old Sony Xploud 2 channel amp (pretty crappy & dated but it works fine). Its 1000W Max @ 2 Ohms & 500W per channel. With the efforts of saving space, the sealed enclosure looks like the way to go |

for a ported box 8" subs are supposed to be in a .3-.6 cubic inch box. I have one in my sedan and every mfg I saw said .3 to .35 cubic inch sealed or .6 if ported I've have several people freak when I open the trunk and they see this little box....sounds good. But with most any 8" of moderate price range, dont be suprised if you miss some of the very low notes. They just roll off pretty hard at about 25-30 hz
Mine is a JBL sub and amp @ 250rms This is pretty much what I bought Last edited by sickpuppy1; 09-18-2013 at 08:27 PM. |

Just remember that the larger you build the enclosure, the lower the frequency of the sealed enclosure. Be wary though, going below the speaker's Fs through the enclosure chamber size along with overdriving the speaker...that means bad things.
Laymen's translation, don't go too big with the size of the enclosure and don't give it bad (clipped) signal. Listen to what SP just posted. Don't expect too much from the little woofer. It's not a big speaker. You have to give something to get something...

And next time I will go with a single 12, myself. Not for loudness but for hitting the very low without straining. I may try a sealed box to get away from the resonant freg. inherit to a ported box.

^ hitting the low shouldn't be an issue with the ported box.
Unloading below the res freq is definitely the scary thing. IIRC, the resonant freq of a Yaris sedan is 40-43Hz. If you can design the ported enclosure to couple over or under the vehicle's frequency you'll have an extended "boost" without even touching the crossover section.

Sorry for the late reply, ended up just winging it and it turned out great.
I went for separate chambers as suggested
