It usually starts with a squeak, then it becomes a louder grinding noise, and as the bearing goes, they begin to rattle due to the slop in the shaft. At that point you should see a fairly good coolant leak.

It definitely starts to rattle. You might not notice it when cruising on the road, but it is obvious when you're parked with your engine running. If you do change the water pump, remember to put in a new serpentine belt since it's same labor.

Check for thrown coolant on the underside of the hood. Possibly an indicator a long time before the pump packs it in.

When mine failed at 15K miles.
I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary.
I did see the coolant spray from front to back on the inside hood and inside the water pumps pulley.

here's my issue, posted in its owne thread... http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34990

My girls 08 yaris has been making a racket from under the hood it Sounds like a knocking coming from the passenger side where the accessories are. Its stays constant at idle and when you raise the rpms.
I Pulled the accessory belt off and the noise went away. Put it back on and it was back. Pulled out a stethoscope and tried to listen for anything out of the ordinary on the a/c, alt and water pump. Think I can hear the noise coming from the water pump. Every thing else sounded normal, but I can hear the rattle when I put the scope on the water pump near the pulley just not as loud. Any ideas? Will a water pump make that big of a racket?

Yes. When it gets bad it's pretty noisy. You need to replace it. Get a non-Toyota aftermarket brand. Check some of the other water pump threads for recommendations on which to choose.

Some of the aftermarket ones are so cheap it's suspicious though, but they do however LOOK sturdier

Wow another close yaris owner. Live in Fayetteville also and had my pump go out. Noticed long before it got serious by the spray sign under the hood. Easy change at my shop. Give a holler if you need assistance.

What is the drill to loosen the suspension and drop the engine so you can get the wp in and out? Is that what you do drop the engine?

Or is it something else?

Or is there a way without dropping it?

Thanks!

easiest way is to check the inner side of the pulley you should see pink stuff if its busted cause by leak

got it done this morning. didn't see alot of pink until i pulled the a/c pump, but the bay is so dirty it was easy to over look the spray/dirt on the hood. i didn't have to drop the motor, just slide it back about 1/2" using a breaker bar btween the mount and head. didn't need to use any force it moved real easy. got all the parts from napa, in stock and could have done the hole job from the hood without getting under the car if not for the lower bolt and running the new belt.

I'm not sure what year Toyota started the 5 year/60K powertrain warranty, but water pumps are covered. It says this in the 2010 warranty book I have.
