Thank you both for your replies....I should have mentioned..I have not run the ac since it left the showroom on 8/13..windows open....and I'm 52 and drive conservatively...45-65 range tops....coast to reds and slow starts..so maybe that's helping.....

Anyway I am thrilled with 42 in an Auto.....I haven't gotten anything like that in the past since I had my motorcycle back in the 70's.....take care

yup, conservative driving definitely helps! Congrats to you I get 35 mpg average but that's cuz I am driving 100% city and the road I drive on is a major road so uh, lots of stopping.. and lots of lights.

Hmm. Conservative driving... that's why I'm down to 7mpg. :p

My first fill up: 311.4miles; 10.35 gallons; just 30.1 MPG :(

It was brand new from the dealer at 20 miles when I got it.
I always use A/C; 60% highway (only 55-65mph); and 40% city (mostly 40-45 mph);
Slow starts - never get the rpm higher than 3000, mostly 2500 at the very low gear.
Always haul full passangers: 2 adults & 3 young kids (total passenger weight: 440 lbs)

Any ideas why such a low mileage? how to improve here???

jmharn...just some info from my personal driving habits so far...

1. I have not used the ac since the dealer demo'd it for me outside the dealership on 8/13/07 when I picked up the car brand new w/ 8 miles on it.

2. Driver side window is open almost all the time.

3. I almost always have my 13 year old son in the front seat w/ me (going to hockey) and 2 hockey bags in the trunk/back seat. I'm 6'0 180 lbs, he's approx 95 lbs, the hockey bags are approx 20-25 lbs each so total weight is approx 300-320lbs.

4. I drive almost 75 % suburban roads...(secondary highway's 45mph to 60mph max)

5 I try and hyper-mile- my definition of that is coasting to red lights when I can..slow start up's (no tach in my 4 door automatic sedan so I can't relay any rpm info) and I am letting a LOT of traffic pass me ..I try and be consistent in staying between 45 and 60 mph with no gas after cresting the top of hills.

6 I live in Southern Dutchess County so I have not been in bumper to bumper traffic yet (NYC) and I have filled up at the same Pilot station all 4 fill-ups while putting in gas all the way to the top.

Good Luck on your next couple of tanks..I'm sure it will improve ..I am 52 and I have slowed down (driving-wise only) quite a bit and all those cars that now pass me .....I will pass them while they are filling up.

Take care, Good Luck and all the best..-Dan

I love this car as well. When I get sad, I just sit in it for a few minutes, and I feel better.
