Should I get winter tires or no?

I have a set of Michelin destiny tires on, and they have a decent amount of tread left. Last year I bought goodyear ultragrip tires second hand with rims and they cost me $80. I didnt feel like I got good traction out of them and they still had a decent amount of tread left.

Is it worth it to get winter tires on the yaris sedan? I dont really feel like its done much, I've gotten stuck many times even in lighter snow

In Canada? Heck yeah.

Check how much thread is left on your winters, but for 80$ pretty sure they are done for. At about 6/32, consider them finished for winter tires.

At 7c rubber start to harden, that's when all season tires start losing traction versus winter tires. So even if I doesn't show, you will be safer in winter tires.

+1 for the winters. That being said, have them mounted on their own dedicated rims. This way you can put them on yourself and do it right before the first big snow fall or when Temps are consistently be zero and then remove them when Temps start to hover above 5 degrees in the day time.

I do this and the winter tires last ridiculously long since they're only used in below freezing temps.

On a light car like the Yaris winter tires make is invincible in the snow in regards to control. I was taught to drive in big heavy sedans w/ all seasons and i'm glad I was, but I light car w/ winters on is a great set up and we'll worth it if you travel on congested roads w/ people not paying attention

Big heavy? I drove an Audi Q7, and on all seasons, it was just sliding all around.

In regards to it teaches you how to drive cautiously and well in the snow. Heavy sedans on all seasons are train wrecks in snow. Once the tires break traction they are gone on whatever way inertia wants to take it.

It taught me a lot how to not slam the brakes last minute in the snow.

Absolutely! It's the responsible thing to do... for your safety and the safety of others on the road. In addition to improving winter driving, winter tyres significantly reduce accidents. Like Quebec, winter tyres should be mandatory in Ontario.

Yes get winter tires. The Yaris is pretty sure footed especially in the hands of a good driver. Although, it is an unstoppable force with winter tires. Also, as confident as you may be behind the wheel, there will be that one day where your winter tires or lack thereof will determin the outcome of a quick emergency manouver. Also, i see you live in Hamilton so you and i see similar road conditions. You dont want to be that guy holding up traffic because you dont have winter tires and cant make it up a hill. I hate all those people.... Dont be that guy buy some tires.

Snows are better than most A/S . Might want to consider General Altimax Arctic . Very reasonable price and said to perform very well . Studs are optional . Keep us updated on your decision . We're likely to go with 4 Bridgestone Blizzak 80s' . Might cost about $70 each with a rebate through G.M.. Going to try to get the Chevy dealer to match a local Wal-Mart . Need the Model Number of the tire for price match .

I plan on buying a dedicated set of steel wheels and mounting Bridgestone Blizzak WS80s for this winter and running when temps are freezing or ice and snow.

You don't need to wait for freezing, as soon as it gets under 7°c then winter tires are already beneficial.

True but if you want your tires to last more than 4 seasons then you'll want to wait until the conditions stated above

We usually wait until early December for install of Blizzak WS60s' that lasted 4 winters . 2011 > 2014/15 . Last year their use was Novemeber until late April , being a colder and snowier season . The 80s' will replace those . Said to be slightly above normal temps and less precip due to El-Nino . The other car had new Geneal Alitmax RT43 H rated A/S since last October . They did well . Tried not to use them during snow / icey days . Did drive them on snow packed / icey roads without any issue . Try to keep tires at 35 p.s.i..

Absolutely get winter tires. Not all seasons. A front wheel drive car with good snow tires is, in my opinion, better than a 4 wheel drive in most situations. The vehicle will be pulled in the direction you steer with nothing pushing in a straight line behind it. Just remember that snow tires aren't going to keep you from getting stuck in deeper snow. In the Yaris, it's the ground clearance that gets you. But if you're driving on icy roads, which most of winter is around here, the Yaris is a machine. I'm on Michelin X-Ice 3's and very happy with them.

Opinion???
Fact and experience with different propulsion, traction systems will give different results.

All season tires are ok in the snow but winter tires will always be better in all aspects.
