Parking Brake Adjustment Q's
Well, I have read a lot of the manuals posted above in the stickies... but I don't fully understand them.
Can anyone help me find out how to adjust the parking brake handle on my sedan? In about 6 months time, it went from stopping the car by picking it up to 1 click, to now doing the same after a few clicks! It has become very loose, and even when its pulled a good amount, you can get out of the car, or even shake it a bit, and the drums make noise, as if(most likely) the pads are letting go of the drums and not holding the car in place. Can this be because something is wrong? Could it be that just the parking brake handle has to be adjusted somehow? Could it be the drum shoes are almost gone? It does squeal a bit at times when the car is stopped and the brakes are let go/re applied only to let the car move just slightly forward or backwards. Please help! I currently have about 49,000miles on the car all original parts. Brake pads in front look brand new and are not causing any issues, but I can post pictures if anything.. Its just the rear drums and the brake lever that are a concern to me. Thank you. |

It's normal for the parking brake to go slack as the rear brake linings wear. Has to be adjusted to tighten it up. Check the brakes first to see if they need replacement. Seems early for that to me, but they could.

I posted a DIY awile ago for this
http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/sho...hlight=parking You should be adjusting your rear drums/parking brake every 6 months usually every time the tires are rotated. But this is one of the most neglected things. Next to rotateting tires

Ok, I will check this in the morning then, but the question remains,
is the reason why the e-brake being so loose now because the rear drum shoes are worn down a lot?? Or Does the e-brake line have to be adjusted itself every once in a while? I know in my dads car, I pull it half way up, and the rear wheels lock easy. This car, you can pull with all your might, and the rear will NEVER lock up. |
