Torque wrench for valve cover?

Hi guys,
I need to change gasket under valve cover (small oil leak into one plug chamber) of my 2SZ-FE engine.
I did not find torque for exactly this engine but most small Toyota engines use 10-12 Nm for valve cover bolts so I guess that should be OK for me too.
However - I do not have torque wrench for such a small torque.
So the question is - how critical the exact torque for the cover is? My wild guess is that it is "not critical" and sensitive tighting by hand should suffice. It is not the head (where torque wrench would be a must). Are you with me on this?
Or is the material extremely problematic and I should really get a torque wrench?
Also - how about the order of tightening, is there any specific rule? For heads we go inside out in circles, but the valve cover is simply just a bunch of bolts around. Should I go zigzag or...?
Thanks for sharing anything on that.
