Toyota recalls 130,000 U.S. Yaris cars

NEW YORK -- Toyota is recalling 1.3 million vehicles worldwide due to a seat belt defect. The recall includes more than 130,000 Yaris models sold in the U.S.
Toyota Motor Sales USA says it is working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall 134,900 model-year 2006 and 2007 Yaris subcompact cars. The automaker says in severe front-end collisions, the seat belt is at risk of causing a foam pad in the vehicle to ignite.
Toyota spokesman Brian R. Lyons says no one has reported a case where that has actually happened.

He says consumers who own the vehicle will receive letters next week. They can then take the car to their dealer to perform an hour-long fix of the problem

On January 28, 2009, Toyota filed a Defect Information Report (DIR) with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding certain 2006 through 2007 model year Yaris vehicles. The involved vehicles contain a Center Pillar Sound Insulator located underneath the driver and front passenger seatbelt pretensioners. In the event of seat belt pretensioner deployment, the gas generated may affect the Center Pillar Sound Insulators. In the worst case, if the sound insulators ignite, this condition will result in a post-collision fire.


There are approximately 134,900 Yaris vehicles involved in this campaign. A dealer package including technical instructions, VIN list and reimbursement procedures will be mailed to dealers in late January, 2009. Dealers will be requested to modify the vehicle at NO CHARGE to customers. The modification will entail removal of the small urethane Center Pillar Sound Insulators (sponge) underneath the driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners. The repair area is located behind the center pillar covers. There are no parts involved.


Toyota will inform owners of the involved vehicles with a Special Service Campaign notification letter sent via first class mail beginning in early February, 2009. A Q&A has been attached for your reference.

I wonder if the "January 2005 to April 2008" date and the exhaust issue from the MSNBC article are just for Japan and maybe just for that Ractis model. The official Toyota US announcement says "On 2006 through 2007 model year Yaris", which does not match up to the other date range, and it also does not mention the exhaust issue.

TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp said Wednesday it would recall more than 1.35 million Vitz and two other models globally to fix a defect in the seatbelt, a component in the exhaust system or both.

Subject to the recall in Japan are 525,898 Vitz, Belta and Ractis cars built from January 2005 to April 2008, Toyota said in a filing with the transport ministry.

Toyota also said it will recall a combined 830,000 units of the Vitz subcompact and Belta — called Yaris in many markets, including the United States — exported to Europe, North America and other countries.

One case of fire was reported in Japan due to the faulty seatbelt design, which could cause a noise-absorber device to melt when the seatbelt tensioner is activated in a collision, Toyota said.

No accident was reported in Japan from the defective exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) pipe, which could crack in the worst-case scenario and cause exhaust gases that fail to clear emissions standards to leak.

Toyota declined to disclose the estimated cost of the recalls.

Last week, Toyota overtook General Motors in global vehicle sales for the first time, bringing to an end GM’s 77-year run as the world’s largest automaker.

GM, now struggling to restructure under a $13.4 billion U.S. government bailout, had held the title as the global auto industry leader for over seven decades and used the line in its marketing.

But for 2008, Detroit-based GM said its sales decreased to 8.35 million vehicles, pressured by tightening credit and a slowdown that began in the United States and spread to emerging markets where GM has been stronger.

Earlier in the week, Toyota said its global sales for 2008 had slipped 4 percent to 8.97 million vehicles as it also battled a costly slowdown in key markets.
