Alternator intermittently charging after 323,000 miles.

ok, so after doing 323,000 miles on my yaris, my alternator light on my dash kept coming on intermittently while cruising at 3000rpm. but once i put the car into neutral and rev it to 6500rpm, the light will go off and come back on sometimes after a couple minutes or sometimes after a couple hours. it varied. so, i got a used alternator from miami off an 08 yaris doing only 7000 miles for $75. the alternator looks brand new. so, i new i couldn't go wrong. i swapped it out and now the problem is gone.

this is the first part that i've ever changed on the engine, apart from regular maintenance parts.

All you needed were Alt brushes probably.

Never the less, go buy a reliable car for a change..

is it just me or is that insanely crazy. I calculated 329 miles driven a day to get that kind of total mileage

This is just ridiculous can't the Toyota engineers do any better than this? Hell my '86 BMW would get a good 30k miles out of an alternator

I'll say it again, your 300k mile car is the sole reason I bought my first new car in 20 years of buying cars, nothing convinced me more to buy a new Yaris like your real world data-point. Toyota should make you a star of their ad campaigns.

Last night I was talking to one of my church friends, a cell phone company sales manager who is on the road a bit. He got his Yaris sedan last May and has over 38,000 on it already. Not in your league, but racking up some miles. He hasn't had any issues yet. We discussed Toyota's reputation for reliability and longevity. His is an automatic, and he says it gets 50 MPG on long Interstate trips. Says his wife refuses to drive it, though, and calls it an "ugly clown car." She says it "doesn't have any front end." (I think she drives some sort of SUV.) Oh well, you can't please everybody. He was tickled to death to hear how my family now drives three Yaris sedans.
