Dislike current design trends

I like my 2008 4-door Yaris sedan (black, auto, 53,000 miles). Always liked the "4-doors with a trunk" style. The Toyota Echo even had that body style I believe.

I am not a fan of the current design trends on everything from the most expensive cars down to the cheapest. Did Audi start it with the wide open grilles? I am a big Toyota fan and think the 2015 Corolla and Camry look decent, but my main gripe is that Toyota does not offer a 4-door Yaris with a trunk anymore, and the new Yaris hatchback grille looks, well, I just don't care for it. Too radical for a basic puddle jumper in my mind. Does everything need to have the same design queues in the entire automotive world? Can't someone come out with a simple, uncomplicated looking front bumper (again)?

Just had to get that off my chest and see where it will go. Maybe there is news that I haven't heard about "less is more" being the new trend?

Thanks for reading. Comments?

I have a 2 door hatch black Yaris purchased in January 2014. I was looking at 2012 and newer but dislike the new look and size. Same thing for Audi, I have a B6 A4 Avant, last generation before they went with the big mouth front end like everyone else is doing as well now. Most have no originality in design and somewhat copy each other.

I'm a fan of the big mouth look. But its been trending since the 90's, I.e its not a new idea. Think of the early imprezas and lancers, big gaping openings, makes it look like the car is screaming!

The new Yaris front end, and others like it, always make me think of the Austin Martin front ends. In the case of the Yaris, I'm luke warm on it, but for some reason I really like it on the new Ford Focus ST.

If you think the focus ST is nice. Wait until you see the focus RS coming out at the end of the year. See link below.

Wowzers. That is super sick. Ford is not playing these days.

A current Yaris sedan does exist for some markets, but the US got screwed out of it this time around. It's sad because it looks like a great car, arguably better than the hatch we get, depending on your likes.

Toyota sold quite a bit of Yaris sedans in the US, particularly from '07-'09. This is a missed sales opportunity for Toyota, but they just want to move you into a Corolla.

As far as styling trends, yeah, every 5-10 years carries trends that seem to cross the auto industry, that's just natural. However, compare today's variety to any other decade, and we see far greater distinction across the industry. Aside from having so many categories of vehicles compared to very few categories in the past, we have way more dynamically shaped and styled cars today. Remember when every car (say '70s and '80s) had virtually the same headlights (basically universal rectangular or circular units). Most taillights were rectangular and very similar. Most grills were plain rectangles.

^^^^^I like the looks of the '07-'12 Yaris sedan (like yours) , and the looks of the current Corolla S Sedan . Sorry, the looks of the current other market Yaris sedan (picture you included above) =, IMO.

Great looking Subie !

I'm assuming the Mitsu is a Lancer. I used to have an AWD Galant VR-4. You couldn't see the spoiler from that profile...it was lower than on the Lancer. It also had a 'closed' front.

I think that Toyota has been hit and miss with the gaping grill/bumper designs.

Some of the Lexus designs are solid, and the Camry isn't bad either - though I'm not a big fan of the LED running/fog light strips on front bumper of Camry.

The latest Corolla isn't attractive at all, especially in the S trim, and it has a really wimpy/cheap looking stance due to a variety of poor design decisions.

The Scion iA has perhaps the ugliest front I have ever seen - well except for that new fuel cell car that Toyota unveiled recently. The front of the iM is also pretty horrible, and Toyota should have stayed truer to the Toyota Auris design from overseas.

The 2015 Yaris SE looks great to me (especially in-person, and in white), overall - though the L/LE not-so-much, mostly due to the different texture/materials of the front grill area, 15" wheels that look too small on the 2012+ boxier sheet-metal, lack of fog-lights, old-school, basic headlights, etc. If did take a bit for the 2015 front design to really grow on me though - especially since close-up photo and camera lens distortion doesn't begin to do it justice.

I'm also a fan of the 2007-2011 Yaris Sedan aesthetics - it's just a good looking little sedan to me. The 2007-2011 hatches are also cute, but don't usually shine except with the S skirts/lips on them, with 16" wheels and lowered just a little bit. The 2012-2014 Yaris looks decent also (with 16" wheels), but has nowhere near the extra design refinement of the 2015, overall - at least to me.

IMO, the 'too small' look is largely because of the cheaper, thinner tires Toyota decided to make de rigueur on the non SE 2012-2014 in the U.S., rather than the ones that came with the Convenience Package 2007-2011/were on most 2007-2011s (185/60-15s or 195/60-15s). When the OEMs wear out, I'm going to put 60 series tires (that size) on my '14.

I agree with you that the front of the 2015 looks better () than the front of the 2012-2014, but I think the rear of the 2012-2014 looks better than the rear of the 2015. I like the chrome strip on the hatch (rather that the 'car color' one on the 2015, and I don't like the back up light being on the bottom of the rear bumper on the 2015.

The 2015 Japanese Vitz RS has the 2015 Yaris SE front, the 2012-2014 Yaris SE rear, plus cooler taillights than either the 2012-2014 or 2015 SE in the USA - AND LOOKS HOT!!!

I also love how the Japanese RS has a very cool, upscale climate control system in the cockpit. All the USA versions of the Yaris have the old-school controls of the cheapest Vitz model in Japan.

Never liked the looks of the sedan Yaris. Always looked cheap to me. Like a cheap knockoff for somebody that couldn't quite afford a Corolla. Love the hatchbacks, and I think the 15 Yaris is quite attractive. Very European. I don't think Americans are used to seeing a European car, thus it is an accustomed taste. I love European cars.

Interesting. I've always thought the '07-'12 Yaris sedan looks better than any Corolla except the current body style...especially the current S (minus the 'boy wonder' alloys on the current S).

I had 2 Echo sedans. Looking back, cosmetically speaking ONLY, I don't know what I was ever thinking. My brother had one too that had almost 200k trouble free miles on it before some lady pulled out in front of him. Daphne was totalled. Such a shame, because he absolutely loved it so much. Never put a dime into it but maintenance. That's why I'm such a fan of the Yaris. I don't care if it's long in the tooth. Nothing is as dependable. And that means a lot to me.

Thanks for the photo. Not too shabby. I'd buy one.

After driving a hatchback, I'll never own another truck style sedan. Trunks do hold more stuff, but they are limited to what they can carry. Tall things often will not fit. I can put tall boxes or storage containers in my Yaris, but they will not fit in my wife's Mazda.
