3 or 4 times the engine took longer than usual for my car to turn over, but eventually it did.

According to the manual you don't need to hold it past start, the engine will automatically "turn over" until it starts. I think it gives up after 15 seconds or something like that. When it's been very very cold here it's taken mine 4-5 seconds to start, but I've never had to hold it in.
Generally when I start the car, I crank the key all the way quickly and just let go, the car does the rest by itself.

exactly, the cranking system is sorta "smart"... Which leads to fun situations when you try start up another car without that feature

Hm, I've noticed it too but never really thought about it. Except to tell my brother about it when it happened, because it was weird.

Good to know it's supposed to happen.

ya, all 2nd generation yaris (05+ in Europe and 06+ in North America) are like that. It's a little feature that prevents you from cranking it again when the car is already started. I never hold the key to start when start the car.

Yeah, I have had mine turn over for 4-5 seconds a couple of times. Weather was not too cold,60-70 deg during our harsh winters of Florida.
