Wont go in "Park"

Good morning. Helping a friend with 2012 Yaris hatchback that he bought on insurance auction. The car has had busted radiator/condenser and lower bracket for rad. support. Apparently the car ran over something. The engine/transmission and underside in general appears intact. It shifts through all gears from L up to P. However, when the shifter is in "P", The car is actually still in reverse ("R" shows on dash and reverse lights are turned on). The car rolls freely when in "P". Shifter linkage appears intact all the way from shifter lever bushing to transmission. Selector switch on the transmission body appears visually intact.
So our plan is to swap transmission. I just wanted to ask if you could see specific problem or a fix that I don't see. I suspect the impact caused breakage of parking pawl of the differential, so that's why the car rolls when in "P". So I am wondering if we could get away by replacing differential, rather than entire transaxle. Thank you!

Did you pop off the cable from the shift lever on the trans? Does it go into park?

Just put it in neutral and put on the parking break up when you come to a stop!

pull the cable and try and get it into park from the transmission..if it wont, then its the pwal, and....as far as i know thats deep inside the trans to provide as much leverage as possible

however..treating it like a manual and just using the E-brake is 100% viable...and honestly recomended in the first place to prevent pawl damage

Thank you all who replied. Found the cause - the lever that connects linkage cable and electrical shift switch on transmission body was bent in a such way that linkage bushing would become stuck on transmission housing when attempting to put in Park. Apparently this happened after ran over something. Straightened to its original shape and have a beautifully running car!
