What to do with the old yaris?

I am replacing my 08 with a 2012.
I am in California, and I have to smog the 08 by April 2024.
Engine light is on showing misfire on all four cylinders. One mechanic thinks it's because it's burning oil. If it is burning oil, he will not do a rebuild on the motor. Spark plugs were changed awhile back, and one coil pack was preplaced. It could be injectors.

It has 280,000 on it and runs great. It still has good gas mileage and has never been wrecked. Only a small ding on the hood from a rock and cracked windshield from a rock. Paint has faded from the sun. Clean inside.

I hate to junk it. But without knowing why its throwing those codes....

Would you bother listing it or send it off to the junk yard? If so, what would be a fair price? I got a quote on a motor with 110,000 miles on it installed for $2,300-$2,400.

Thanks

Is the car burning oil or not? Is it low between changes?
I'd reconsider your mechanic and get another opinion on the issue. I definitely wouldn't junk it, you be lucky to get 250. If the issue can't be resolved , I'd sell it for at least 1200.

I never worried about the car burning oil until the last 120 days. It was only by happenstance that I found out that the yaris will burn up to a quart of oil every 1,000 miles.

Funny, the yaris require a smidge under 4 quarts for an oil change and are not changed until 5,000 miles.

I don't think its burning more than what is considered normal for them. I do smell oil though sometimes when I park it.

I just found the info of the California Vehicle retirement program. At the very least the car is worth $1,500 from the state. It still seems such a shame to junk this car.

Update.
Car is burning oil on cylinder 1. The guy put a new sparkplug in and said it should pass smog and to put a new plug in anytime it feels sluggish again and drive it. It should go 4-5 more years.

Considering the condition of your car, with the high mileage but still running great, I agree that junking it might not be the best option. You mentioned the California Vehicle retirement program, which could give you a decent amount for your car. It's definitely worth looking into if you're thinking of parting ways with it.

On the other hand, it's great that you got a new spark plug for cylinder 1 and that the mechanic thinks it should pass the smog test. If it can keep running smoothly for another 4-5 years, that's pretty impressive!

wow. 280. nice. I have an 09 at 263k. I agree with others, bummer to junk a car where most of it is good. Could donate it and do a tax write off but that's up to you.
