Manual To Auto

I have a 2001 ECHO with manual transmission I am very fond of. Only 44k miles on it. But Im getting to old to push the clutch in anymore. Is it economically feasible to drop an automatic transmission in it? Ive been looking at Yaris's with auto's but they would be like $10,000 for a used on and a new one is like $15,000 bottom line. I was wondering if the auto swap was possible for my ECHO?

It would be cheaper to sell it and buy a newer Yaris.

You're never too old. Couple hours a week doing leg and calf presses at the gym should keep you going

But seriously, I'm guessing you would have to go to a specialty shop to make the conversion. Found a decent price for just the tranny itself here, assuming you don't mind having a used one. This could be your best deal.

I say that because a couple years ago I had to replace my auto tranny on my last car, so I opted for a used one still in good shape. The bill was $700 for the unit + one-time fee of $800 for labor. And that was no conversion, just a $1500 credit card debt...

Good luck

Sell Echo and get a Yaris. ;) I have had both. I now drive an auto Yaris and love it. (Echo was a stick/2004) Yaris is a better car.

It would certainly be cheaper to buy an automatic transmission and have it installed but then you are putting a good amount of money into a 2001 Echo.

I certainly wouldn't say that buying a Yaris is the cheapest option either.

Personally I'd suggest looking for a used automatic Echo since you are fond of them and selling your Echo. This way you end up with little money at all being spent simply to switch to an auto.

Found a used 2004 ECHO with auto for $5995. 53k miles. I called AMMCO and they said while possible, it would cost about $8000. Now I need a buyer for my old ECHO!

That sounds like the way to go. Buy that one for $5000 sell yours for $4000 and in the end you will have spent a $1000 to upgrade to a 3 year newer car with an automatic trans!

How interchangeable is it from version 1 to version 2? I made the mistake of buying an auto Yaris. Lets say there was a way to retrofit ... I'd do a trade seeing that you're in NJ, but I would still need a 5spd Yaris ECU.
