So it sounds like Toyota is simply ripping out this sponge thingy from beneath the front seat belt attachments.

Is this something we can do ourselves... I don't want to take my car into the dealer, have some guy in the service bay destroy my interior and poke around my car for such a thing as this.

One hour...right...i can see me spending 3-4 hours sitting around waiting for this to be done while they do god knows what that you dont see...oh not to mention the 'other' recommended services they would want me to do (nothing is ever free on a recall). Sorry to rant, ive had some bad experiences at dealers and ive heard far too many horror stories...

Someone get with your Toyota tech and get the details (and make them give you the parts they removed so we know what they look like) take pics and post a DIY on what is done. Sounds like much ado about nothing.

Q10b: Does the noise level inside of vehicles change after removal of the small urethane Center Pillar Sound Insulators (sponge)?

A10b: Toyota has confirmed that the vehicles interior noise level is not impacted by this modification.

i hate this. Yaris is already loud !!! they should replace it with something safe!! They should offer us $$ for taking stuff out of the car

You know, the search tool is not as thorough as I would like. Almost all the time I will look for something, and then get many posts that have nothing to do with what I am searching for. I guess I'm just too used to google.

This is scary....I am calling my dealer tomorrow and I thank you for mentioning this..Look at this paragraph from your link:

One case of fire was reported in Japan due to the faulty seatbelt design, which could cause a noise-absorber device to melt when the seatbelt tensioner is activated in a collision, Toyota said.

The concern is if the dealership removes the sound insulation, the interior noise will get even louder than it already is! For the remote chance of it catching fire in an accident (it has only occured once as far as I know), some people would rather chance it than have to live with an even noisier Yaris!

Not all recalls are for safety's sake, many are to cover the manufacturer's ass in case of lawsuits. If Toyota was truly caring about its customers, it would replace the insulation with some that is fire-resistant. But no, the solution is just to remove it to save them from future litigation; and to hell with the customer!

Cheers! M2

Actually, you are correct; I am just going by what is posted on here, and don't know for sure if Toyota is simply removing the insulation without replacing it. As this is my first Toyota, I am hoping that is not the case as it would leave many with a bad impression; but knowing that our beloved Yaris is basically their entry-level car (at least here in the States) and that the company skimped in many areas (such as split-folding rear seats being standard on the liftbacks prior to 09, or at least one locking glovebox) I have a suspicion that they may simply just remove it. I hope I am incorrect...

Cheers! M2
