I had a $40 ct12 turbo fall into my lap the other day. I know it's too small for best performance on a 1nzfe, but would it work for improving torque at mid-range?
I'm thinking around 5psi boost, and if boost fell off towards redline, that wouldn't be a bad thing in my mind.
Besides the logistics of making the thing fit, is there a downside to using this turbo?

There are a few types of ct12 turbo. One comes from the supra and other one from the toyota hiace diesel, i think.

Now on a 1.3l [4efte] with the ct12 i used to get full boost at 2,500/800 rpms or so. On a 1.5l it will be way lower,but not very recommended in a 1nzfe. It will improve torque but the expense of fitting it outweigh the benefits,in my opinion.

The ct12 from the supra is slightly bigger than the one from the Hiace but i still think its better to go for a td04 [small one] and it will give better top end.

Yes, when I did some initial research, I thought the tercel was a 1.5l engine. I bought the turbo knowing full well that it may not be suitable, but that I could likely get my money back.
Full boost at 2500 or less would be awesome. Less than full boost above 5000 would be fine by me. If it becomes an air restriction, obviously that would be a fail.
Anyway, nothing is happening until the temps are above freezing.
I appreciate hearing from someone who has experience with this turbo.
I think this one is off a supra, but I'll have to google some images to see. The previous owner found it on the back seat of a used car he bought. I have no other history on it. There is a tiny amount of side play in it and seems to be in otherwise good shape.

I had an experience with a very small turbo -- Garrett GT1548

So I though I could share :P

Before I start explaining the whole situation/setup I will give you my main idea about a ''too small'' turbo; ''NEVER AGAIN''

1. When a turbo is too small, it is not working in is efficient area... I burnt 2 GT1548 because it was too small, overtime it put too much stress on the CHRA, with both brand new turbo the wheel fins scrapped the housing!

2. Low rpm power was a great gain over stock, lets say amazing :P But high end was a real bull****, N/A 1nzfe was faster at high rpm or high speed 100km/h+ :/

3.If you still choose to go small, get at least 3inch exhaust system from turbo to the back. My setup used a 2¼inch full turbo back straight pipe. Smaller turbo = huge exhaust, because smaller turbo creates a lot of backpressure!

I am now running a Garrett GT2252 turbo, this is the smallest turbo I would use with a stock 1nzfe engine & the CHRA is journal bearing so cheaper than ballbearing. I also got an extra Garrett GT2554R ballbearing which is the best turbo for a 1nzfe up to 200whp.

The GT2252 turbo is alright with my 2¼ exhaust, much less backpressure than the GT1548. Still 3'' would be the best.

Judging by the picture, the exhaust size of the turbo looks smaller than my
GT15! :O

If so, I would get rid of it right away just like you said.

Good luck, Im sure you will find a better turbo :P
