Importing RS from Canada to US!
Hello,
After 3 weeks I'v got my 2D/LB.. my cousin wants one also. He told me to look for a 4D-RS and I guess that will be from Canada only cuz I am in USA. Anyone konws about regulations when importing a car from Canada to States? I am sure there will be additional fees and troublesome, but I need some kind of starting points. Many thanks for any feed back! |

Thx Blen!
Wow.. The link uses many big words and god-konw-where offices.. I spent 10 minutes reading on it and feeling sleepy already. I will make my cousin to read it by himself. I remember peeps with JDM RHD vehicles from local meets told me some government departments need to pass 7 Smash Tests before issuing a validation. SEVEN CARS! I think it will be easier just to pray hard and hope Toy will bring 4D/LB version for USDM. I figure another try is by asking international moving company about it. Let me know if anyone knows better solutions. |

Importing Canadian Spec Cars into USA is fairly easy. The exact steps involved are documented here:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...nada07032.html Of course, I wouldn't recommend it, as the USD is kinda weak, you're going to end up paying $20k US for a 5 dr RS. But the process is simple, and you'll know fairly quickly if the vehicle complies or not. I've helped a lot of US friends buy Canadian cars back when the CDN:USD ratio was 1.5:1.

Hey... this helps.
$20k for a Yaris is a bit stiff, but my cousin was looking for a 04-IS300. I will let him know and see him bite down his fingers on this one. Maybe bring in cash at Canadian dealer will help a little bit. |

It's a low cost car, realistically you're not gonna get more than $800us off.
It's also illegal to buy a car with cash (well transactions over $5k). Dealership won't sell it to you.

why is it illegal to buy a car cash ?? If so, that means you cannot buy a car without any credit ??

No, you can pay by cheque. I'm talking about cash cash haha. Things tightened up a lot ever since 9/11. I was assuming the OP was going to drive to Canada and bring a wad of cash with him. Buying a car with a US cheque or even a US certified money order takes some time to clear, so he won't be able to leave for a while.

Before you run up to Canada and buy one of those great 5DR Yaris, check with your State Department of Motor Vehicles and find out about all the shit you have to go through to get the car over the Canada-US border and then finally registered in California.

I think it is not a legal issue when buying car with cash. It is more of a security issue since $10K in green is a lot of paper, and any normal business does not see this happen often (casino?).

Easier to make arrangements through a local bank known to the Canadian Dealer, who can then make the arrangements for a wire transfer. I swear that the Civil Forfeiture crap was engineered to insure tax compliance. The IRS always wants their interests respected. Who can blame them, given how our Congress loves to spend money. The certification process is irritating for sure.... "To be imported free of restriction, a motor vehicle less than 25 years old must be originally manufactured to comply with all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) and bear a label certifying such compliance that is permanently affixed by the vehicle’s original manufacturer. A motor vehicle that bears a label certifying compliance with all applicable Canadian motor vehicle safety standards (CMVSS), but not with the FMVSS, can still be imported as a conforming motor vehicle under Box 2B on the HS-7 Declaration form to be presented to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Customs) at the time of entry if the following requirements are met: * The vehicle is being imported for personal use and not for resale; * The vehicle is not a salvage vehicle, a repaired salvage vehicle, or a reconstructed vehicle; * The importer obtains a letter from the vehicle’s original manufacturer, on the manufacturer’s letterhead (and not that of a franchised dealer), identifying the vehicle by vehicle identification number (VIN) and stating that the vehicle conforms to all applicable FMVSS except for the labeling requirements of Standards Nos. 101 Controls and Displays and 110 Tire Selection and Rims or 120 Tire Selection and Rims for Motor Vehicles other than Passenger Cars, and/or the specifications of Standard No. 108 Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment, relating to daytime running lamps. Note: To be imported under Box 2B a motor vehicle must be certified by its original manufacturer as complying with all applicable CMVSS. Certain vehicles that are at least 15 years old that are not so certified can be imported into Canada without restriction. Such vehicles may not be imported into the United States under Box 2B." Whole bunch of other stuff...... the bond requirements, if necessary, are probably not cheap. http://204.68.195.250/cars/rules/imp...da01192007.htm Gene |

well now that the US gets a 5-door and an "S" trim which are pretty much identical to the canadian RS, the point is moot. Unless you want a manual gearbox too, that is

My dealer in Oakville Ontario would not accept a credit card for my down-payment (balance Toyota financed). They did accept CC for small initial deposit only.

I believe the 09 Yaris 5dr RS only comes with an automatic tranny with shifter paddles. Not sure what Toyota was thinking on that call.

no paddle shift on any yaris in NA.
MUSKOKA800: it depends on the amount. My dealer took 2500$ off my credit card. You should be also given the choice to have your initial deposit (500$??) reimbursed or credited toward your down payment. |

You are right.. I checked a few months ago and was told by my dealer that there would be no 5 speed manual tranny on the RS model but the auto box came with paddle shifter as well as auto stick shift.Checking now shows 5 speed manual with 09 RS,maybe he was talking 2010 model year.
