Not really recommended, but you can hook it up directly to the wall AC plug, it'll give a 60hz sound.

Or, you can hook it up to any home or car stereo, just don't play it loud.

search for SSS base test (silicon sound system) is a sound file you play over the sub, tests the range of the sub from 360 hertz to 10 hertz.

Test to see if it isn't blown?

If so then just grab a new 9v battery and connect it to the speaker terminals. If it jumps "in" then you hooked up your + and - backwards. Hook it up correctly.

If the speaker jumps "out" to the full travel of the speaker then it's not blown. If it doesn't move or barely moves then it's blown.

actually, you said "without installing it in your car", NOT "without hooking it up". I think most people read what was being asked.

Ask a specific question, give some background maybe? and you'll get great answers on here.

Connect an ohmeter to it. Put the meter on Ohms, it should read the voice coil resistance (2, 4, or 8 Ohms typically) If it reads a short across the plus and neg of the speaker, its SHOT.

ask it a simple question like "what is 2+2?" if it answers correctly, it is fine! and if it does not answer, then it probably does not work...

JUST INSTALL THE SPEAKER, IF YOU HEAR SOUND, BINGO! IF NOT THEN TAKE IT TO A PROFESSIONAL STEREO SHOP.
