Which synthetic oil?

What synthetic oil should I use on my first oil change?

Should I stick to the factory 5w-30?

I live in California, so there is no snow :D

Pennzoil conventional 5w-30 ( SN ) in the yellow bottle is a very good oil at a low price . Here's a virgin oil analysis for it by Petroleum Quality Institute of America ( P.Q.I.A. ) , http://www.pqiamerica.com/Pennzoil.htm . Here are more oils tested . http://www.pqiamerica.com/testresultssep2011.html and http://www.pqiamerica.com/testresultssep2011page2.html . The KENDALL is a semi-synthetic . I believe the synthetic content is 40% or greater . Could start out with it or stick with it . All these oils are S.N. / GF-5 .

Have used Pennzoil regular conventional oil 5w-30 since day 1 on my sedan every 5k miles. It's cheap and gets the job done.. what more could you ask for?

If you plan on sticking to synthetic, just get whatever is for sale IMO. You tend to pay more for the brand name ex:Mobil1 compared to Pennzoil and you'll see almost no difference at all. I believe the 400k mile yaris on this board only used Walmart supertech synthetic oil as it was cheaper than others and he had no problems.

Don't waste your money on synthetic. It's a Yaris, not a Corvette, remember...

Use(d) synthetic for all the YARIS we've had and still own ( '08 sedan ) . Also use Honda synthetic oil ( Conoco Phillips ) 0w-20 in the '11 Fit . Can get SHELL full synthetic for under $4 a quart . Have used their 5w-30 and now using the 5w-20 . Will be doing an O.C. in a week or so . Plan to send in a sample of it for a used oil analysis and will post the results .

Here's three used oil analysis from the '08 sedan . One is the P.Y.B. conventional 5w-30 ( http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34674 ) followed by the SHELL synthetic 5w-30 ( http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36472 ) . Here's another for the 2010 3 door traded in for an '11 Fit , that's P.Y.B. 5w-30 as well ( http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34042 ) .

The 2012 Yaris brochure say you have 25K miles of free maintenance and roadside assistance. Sounds like there should be no worries until after the dealer game is over.
