I always found it something to chuckle about reading these threads. I just could not see a trade happening to get a Yaris, but that was of course when it was only 11-12k for a base model LB when I got mine.

I agree. The only exception I can think of (off the top of my head) would be if you are really busy, are driving a gas guzzler (or near gas guzzler), and your circumstances change. For example, one of my neighbors is an RN and was driving a Pontiac G6. She is a single homeowner. She got pregnant. She traded in the G6 on a new Fiesta that cost her about the same as the average Yaris.

Only had one other vehicle before this, and that was a 2000 Chevy S10 4x2.

Got the Yaris to be a freaky fast sandwich delivery machine!
...then I got fired. Now its just freaky fuel efficient!

That's exactly what happened to me! I had a 2008 nissan pathfinder and used it for about 4 years and man car payments and gas just killed me. School tuition is expensive too so i had to give up the car even though i used the truck to haul my dj equipment. Traded it in for my 2012 toyota yaris se and i don't regret it at all! It is totally win win i save money on gas and car payments! another upside for the most part i can fit my dj equipment in my yaris too!

when i sold cars i saw first hand all sorts of desperate people try to trade in really expensive SUV's. The dealer low balled every single one of them, they offered $20 grand on a 1 year old fully loaded suburban that stickered for around $50k.

really absurd. Looking back, it wasn't surprising only 4 people out of the 15 or so they had could sell anything.

Not everyone has the money (or more importantly SPACE) to keep around several vehicles. I used to always have two cars, but after my wife and I bought our current house there just isn't parking for three cars all of the time. So I went down to one vehicle, and after a gas-guzzling Mustang GT and a problem-prone 325i I was ready to trade into something new(ish) with good gas mileage and reliability. I was upside down on the BMW and ended up paying nearly 16K for a two year old Yaris...but the money I've saved in repairs and gas has more than made up for it and I plan on driving the Yaris until the wheels fall off.

A 19 year old Hyundai Excel was our "trade in". It sold in one day for $1,700 because it ran well, had no mechanical issues, and was maintained properly. The money from the sale lowered the total cash out the door cost of the 2012 down to $14,900.

My cousin traded his s2000 for a 2012 Toyota Yaris SE, no regrets because people would always try to vandalize or steal his car.
