Is non ethanol gas worth the extra cost?
I see a place here with non ethanol gas but it cost around 30 cents a gallon more. Will the savings in MPG's make up for the higher cost??
I do mostly highway miles and average 38 MPG now |

I've not tested this in my Yaris, but my last two trucks and 3 motorcycles all picked up about 10% mileage using plain gas.

It isn't just about mileage...it is about the health of your motor. I would do it no questions asked if there was a place around that I could do so that is for sure. Those are rare.

There is a gas station (Conoco I believe) down the street from a 7-11 with gas pumps. The 7-11 is consistantly 10 cents a gallon cheaper than the Conoco. When you drive past the Conoco there is a big banner that says "No Ethanol" so I decided to not go to the 7-11 that I usually get gas at and get some of this more expensive gas. When I was at the pump about to swipe my card to pay I noticed a big yellow sticker on the pump that says "May contain ethanol". I left and went back to the 7-11. heh

I ran 3 tanks full a couple of months ago and noticed a slight bump in fuel economy (went from ~40MPG to ~43MPG). A cost-benefit analysis shows that I didn't save any money by using E0 over E10.....the additional mileage gained was offset by the additional cost (like yours....it is about 30 cents more per gallon).
Some people feel that any ethanol in their gas has a detrimental effect on the overall health of their engine, but that is difficult, if not impossible, to quantify. I haven't seen any emperical evidence that shows a 10% ratio does any real harm. Denver has used oxygenated gas since I started driving back in the mid 80's (both MTBE & now ethanol) and in nearly 25 years of driving and probably close to 1 million total miles driven on the stuff, I have never had a engine related problem that was due to ethanol in the fuel. Now, this E15 that is being talked about just might cause some problems though. I think increasing ethanol concentrations will have some sort of a negative effect.....not sure what , but the law of unintended consequences will come into play and we'll look back (assuming E15 becomes mandated) and shake our heads and ask "what were we thinking?". |

I've been using non-ethanol gas in my Yaris... only used ethanol gas in the first couple of fills before I started hypermiling. The gas company I buy from just drained their tank of premium (non-ethanol) gas the other day and changed the valves and filters for ethanol gas. State of Pennsylvania has been manditory for ethanol gas starting back in September 16, 2010. Their premium non-ethanol gas which is not popular took over four months to run out! I have 7 gallons left in my car...
Next time I fill-up... sometime in February I will be using ethanol gas. No doubt my mileage will change! I will see just how much in the next several months... Also, I have to take in consideration Winter blend(s)... It is going to be interesting! Cheers!

Hmm, with a gain of 10% that comes about to the same as the cost difference. I believe I will stay with the ethanol gas.

I am really curious what are the gas prices are? and where you are located? I live in Brooklyn and last fill-up I had was 35$ with the gas being 3.439$. and in the city i only average around 29 mpg. Ofc its an Automatic, with a manual here its just a pain in the a$$.

The place I fill-up at is $2.869/gal., but I've seen $2.799/gal at a few places. Your mileage sounds about right for an auto. doing mostly city driving.

alcohol is 50% as volatile. so, to make the same power you need twice as much fuel.
but, on the other hand, alcohol does not detonate. so you can seriously advance timing, have tons of boost, and still not be anywhere near destroying your engine. top fuelers are alcohol engines. they run anywhere from 35-60lbs of boost. and burn anywhere from 13-20 gallons in a 1/4mile run. |

Cheers!

I have not tried it in the Yaris yet, but it made no difference in mpg with the Solstice. What I have heard the best reason to use it , is if you have an older car. Using it will save internal gaskets. Don't know this to be true, but that is what I have heard.

that ethanol free gas website is just from regular people posting up from what they see, like it someone hangs a sign in their window to attract customers for example. you'd really have to take a test kit out there and mix it up to see if the ethanol solution separates as it should if it were actually in there. also its mainly the premium fuels at the station you find are non-blended. do you really want to pay extra for premium that your engine wasn't designed to run on?
every blend of gasoline needs some anti-knock agent. back in the day it was lead, then regulators realized it was bad for the environment. then it was MTBE, but they also realized that was bad for the ground water. now its ethanol which is quite simply a great cleaner at slightly reduced power. people down here in the south say its the devil but thats just because everyones still running around vehicles and equipment from the 70s. Anyone actually keeping up to date with technology wont have a problem running this fuel. Our yaris is averaging between 30 and 35 mpg around town with blended regular fuel.
