Looks pretty cool.
What will this air box actually do??? Is it for engine?? Or for cabin air?? |

It will work as in it wii suck in air.
However, IMO, I doubt that it will have any noticable performance effect and even then, you will have to be going at a considerable speed for it to have any positive effect. |

i disagree, it will help to keep the engine bay cooler. the ultimate add on to this mod would be to add a pipe to the intake

I have built many ram air systems going back to the 1980s.
What Is not in pics is ...The fitting on the bottom fits to a hose that feeds air to the air filter box... This design fitted to a sealed air filter box will supply much cooler air at a slight pressure increase at normal speed. Combustion engines love cool fresh air so I disagree ... From my studies over the years . 10 horsepower increase no ! But a improvement over stock for sure and even better than just a normal cai. |

Also, the area by the cowl is an area of lower pressure when the car is moving fast. A cowl scoop has a wow factor and this is why people do it. However, "a huge boost"? That is simply wishful thinking. |

If cold air=more power, then am I getting more hp in this 28degree winter weather than I do on a 90 summer's day?

Yes, it takes some speed to realize the benefit, but even at a moderate speed you're going to get a power gain. And it's free.

My point is, and the key phrase is, "the right design" .
Not only a right design but, the right design for any particular car and its unique air flow over its cowl. IMO a cowl is a bad place to put an air scoop becase of eratic air flow over the cowl. Last edited by RedRide; 03-02-2011 at 02:39 PM. |

Hmmm... My old 69 z28 and my Old 80 z38 both were factory cowl intake breathers....and my 70 trans am draws all it's air from it's reverse cowl shaker 10 inches from window and it has a air flow sensitive flapper that is quite active in the low pressure area...oh yea and my 450 + horse roller 355 in my stingray draws 100% of its air from a sealed l88 cowl scoop that's 1 inch from the window... I have never had any air starvation issues .. Even at 6500rpm..
2 Old heads I know use yarn taped to the hood to check air flow over hoods for scoop placement.. Not real science IMO but it worked for them for years and they both were excellent 1/4 mile winners. I may tape some yarn to the yaris..lol IMO... It's all just fun to me... I am not expecting anything from my mods to the yaris..all the yaris is for is good mileage and realiable function. I have it set up to track it this spring and all my pals laugh at me but even if I place last at Least I took a econo egg and gave it a try ...lol Last edited by annn; 03-02-2011 at 03:19 PM. |
