Question Steering wheel controls not backlit?

Hi everyone,

Brand new here, so be nice.

I picked up a new (2012) Yaris 1.0 XR spec (our local highest spec 1.0) on Friday. My very first Toyota.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but does the steering wheel controls (audio & BT) have no backlight at all? My car's have no illumination at night, with the lights switched on. I assumed this was a fault and I contacted the dealer today, but the salesperson assured me that this is normal - they simply don't have backlighting!

I don't have access to another one to confirm this and I was hoping you guys/gals could confirm, please.

Thanks.

Yeah, no backlighting, and Aussie models don't get the bluetooth/voice buttons on the right side, only volume/track/mode on left. :(

time to take it back to the dealer... im sure they should be illuminated, but if their not, then they could be a problem and i wouldn't expect a brand new car's audio controls not to be working. contact the dealer you bought it from and have them take a look at it.

Looking at the wiring diagrams for the 2012, they are not illuminated.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Can't believe that it has no backlighting... Did nobody at Toyota test this car at night and noticed this? Not even glow-in-the-dark markings!?!

Just noticed that the passenger window button it not illuminated either.
Easy fix (I hope) - I'll just get a driver's side button and install it there. At least the AUTO writing on it is lit.

These aren't major issues to me as I only use the car during the day, three days a week, but it does raise some concerns as to how well this car was thought out by Toyota. It is 2012. Stuff like this should not be "luxury" items on any car.

Sorry for the mini rant.

@CPALK719
Are yours illuminated then?
I have been to the dealer and they assured me that there is nothing wrong.
If yours works, I might open up the steering wheel and investigate if I can retrofit it.

Nice car, but I miss a few things from my 09 Fiesta which was my previous company car.

Could you please point me to them (assuming they are on the web) good sir?

Might come in handy as I am looking to install an under-dash mounted power socket for a GPS.

Has anyone attempted to add led's to rear side of switch?
Not sure if any wiring would be present to do so.

No wiring is present to do so (unless you forgo cruise or steering wheel audio controls). Also, on vehicles where they are not back lit, the buttons are opaque.
