Hi ive been in the market for a new/used car for a couple of months now. Originally i was considering a wide variety of car companies, especially european cars but recently i decided that reliability is probably the number 1 requirement for me so i decided to stick with either a honda or toyota. This significantly narrowed down my options to either a used corolla, civic, matrix, or celica. Then i discovered the yaris, and it entered my list of potential cars to buy and since it is cheap it is the only new car i can afford, most of the used cars i was looking at were in the sub 10,000 dollar price range so the yaris is a bit more expenisve. My dilema is that i don't know if the yaris is the right car for me. Basically i live in L.A. (lots of traffic) and i am considering the manual liftback since it is the cheapest. I do a lot of city driving and my commute to college is usually 30 min each day. However i am also an avid snowboarder so i go to my local mountain (about an 1hr 15min drive) practically every weekend during the season. So herein lies the first problem, the yaris is quite small and im not sure it can fit all my gear, since there are many international yaris owners on this forum perhaps you could enlighten me on the yaris' storage capacity. Naturally i would install a roof rack for my snowboard and my brother's skii's since i most often go with him. In short i need to know more information about the yaris before i make a decision (i will most likely buy a car by june). I like most things about the yaris but i want to know if the other models i listed above are more suitable for me. Thanks.

How much gear exactly do you have? Do you fill your current accord up completely?

well if im going only with my brother i still have plenty of room. Basically its a snowboard, pair of skiis, ski poles, 2 pairs of boots, two duffle bags, a backpack, and 2 jackets. The yaris would be able to hold a roof rack right? Are the rear seats independantley able to fold flat in case i had a third passenger?

i think you should put the xb in your options it has plenty of room... i have the same prob i am looking to buy a new car... the thing you must remember is the yaris will have no tach so manual will be all engine noise... the xb has massive room by the way and it is comfy. my thing is either an xb or a yaris sedan the liftback doesnt quite agree with me. but you should take a look at the xb scionlife.com or toyotalife.com for more info and first hand experiences!

the yaris can hold a roof rack. and its rear seats are 60:40 split that can fold flat on the floor.

Unfortunately the US version will not have a split rear seat

(I have just checked out the thread containing the specification sheets). Yaris owners in Australia are lucky

the US yaris site shows that the rear seats do split.

ok, checked the North American spec sheets. 60:40 split is available as option for US and available in the RS spec for Canada.

So at the end, he couldn't get the cheapest Yaris model to get the split rear seats...

Just as some reviews say, the price for the basic car is low but once the buyer selects a few options, he/she will find himself/herself paying a lot more

If you can fold down part of the rear seat, a lot of things may be squeezed into the car. You may even be able to save the money you intend to spend on the roof rack
