Took a refrigerator box to the bumper at 60MPH yesterday
Northbound on I-5 near San Clemente @ about 8AM a panel truck with an empty refrigerator box(almost empty, had a couple pieces of wood and misc in it) cut me off so he could get around a slower car in the #2 lane(I'm in #1/fast lane). When he moves my way the change in turbulence lifted the empty box up and over the panels and onto the freeway about 10 feet in front of me. I was able to slow to about 60MPH and deflect the debris off of the passengers side of the bumper. I noticed the truck was not slowing down, I caught back up to him at about 85, got in front and slowed him down while signaling him to move to the shoulder. He complied and we exchanged info, it also gave another car involved(unbeknownst to me, I was busy catching the guy) enough time to catch up, they had damage very similar to mine.
All in all I suffered a scratched bumper and a couple of broken mounting tabs in the wheel well...not too bad considering how it could have turned out at that speed, I'm thankful for that. Anywho, it looks like I might do paint before turbo based on the recent turn of events...it seems like a good time to get the whole thing sprayed. I'm gonna shop some quotes for satin black. The owner of the company and I are going to settle privately. Drive safe everybody!

Glad you are ok, if that had covered your windshield it could get ugly in a hurry.

I didn't have time to sh*t my pants, I had to catch that mofo! I was worried I was going to drag something, but I figured it's better to drag whatever as long as I could make sure the responsible party paid for it. Part of my job as director of safety is to evaluate vehicle accidents. Sometimes we have several driver involved accidents per week that I have to sift through and determine the appropriate course of action...this was right up my alley so to speak.

Wow, it's great to hear that you managed to get the driver to pull over. This way, the guy is stuck paying for his actions, and you don't need to worry about paying a deductible. I can't stand these drivers of trucks who think they're hot $hit and don't need to secure their loads. Luckily, this was just an almost-empty box. It could have turned out much, much worse if there was something inside the box (like, a full-sized refridgerator!).

Aww man, that sucks!
Hope you get it fixed soon! How did you get the guy to pull over? I wouldn't even know where to start unless I had some spare blue lights to put on my roof. |

Man, some of you guys have real ego problems! Beat the guy with a bat? Ah, civilisation seems to be still a long way off! It's just a car fergodsake...
A buddy of mine collected an old overstuffed sofa with his Volvo one night. Some damage to the car, but blew the sofa to smithereens! No pieces to pick up after. |
