I love my yaris but....

Anyone else hate the way the clutch/throttle feels on this car? Before going any further i'll state that i've searched the forum a bit on these topics.. Just looking for more current feedback..

When my car ('07 3dr) is cold, the clutch is very grabby and shudders quite a bit. Then at the point when the clutch fully engages there is a very audible "PING" or "TINK" sound. Once the car is driven for a few miles and warms up, this all goes away. Then, from a stop, i find it so hard to keep throttle/clutch release timing consistent! Either i'm lugging the engine or the RPM skyrockets and i'm riding the clutch. I've found that when I hit the gas prematurely and then release the clutch, i can time it pretty good. I will go ahead and blame it on the electronic throttle lag. I find it hard to downshift and gas it without the same problems..

I wish there was a 'blushing' emoticon.. This is kinda embarrassing to type... I've driven VW's , domestic trucks, BMW's, a '67 big block chevelle and a supercharged C6 corvette...all manual without any problem. Am i just getting too old?! LOL.

Honestly though, i don't want this to turn into a smart-ass "learn how to drive" response fest. If you have some ideas i'd love to hear them. Otherwise just do me a favor and keep it to yourself. We all have Yaris' here and we're here to help each other out...

Thanks!

Will a throttle controller get rid of the throttle lag completely or just shorten the lag time??

I read that the clutch pedal and engagement 'length' can be adjusted. Any truth to that? Would bleeding the clutch master help?

Don't worry, you're not the first to have an issue with this. The Yaris has one of the more finicky clutches out there. After a while though, I've just gotten used to it. Doesn't really bother me.

Here's a huge thread on the issue.

You don't love your Yaris if you're doubting it.

You can love things that aren't perfect. Nothing is perfect. If you think the Yaris or anything else is perfect, you're just lying to yourself.

Yeah I noticed this problem as well. I feel like I just learned how to drive stick about every single morning that I go to work. Throttle lag really was annoying at first, but I got used to it. Otherwise I live my little car.

i noticed the same issue when i got my yaris. after some time u wont even notice it. i drive it flawlessly now, before i was afraid to make any left turns in fear of stalling.

just keep on trucking and u'll learn how to drive it.

as far as clutch adjustment i asked the same thing when i first got my car and the only info i was given was there may or may not be a adjustment right at the pedal.

I've had my Yaris a little over a year. I'm just now feeling comfortable with the clutch, and I've driven manuals for a LONG time.

I had the same issue when I bought my yaris (two weeks ago). I drove it for550 kms as of today and clutch feels much better - almost forgot about this issue.

I drove several cars with manual transmissions over the past years - my observation is that toyota's cheap cars come with pretty uncomfortable manual transmissions compared to other inexpensive cars - takes some time to get used. On the bright side- toyota produces reliable stuff (not sure it is exactly toyota).

I love my 3dr hb a lot overall (2009 with NO power door locks/windows/AC).. nice and simple car.. really fun to drive

I have had the same complaint. After 55k miles, it still does it. I have to give a lot of gas before finding the friction point, otherwise there is a good chance I will kill it, or shudder. I hate that. I like to give minimal gas until the clutch pedal is fully out, but with the Yaris I can't.

Had mine since Jan of this year, and I'm still getting used to the clutch.

Wait until you're stuck at a light going uphill, and that light takes forever to get green. All the while, the car behind you inches ever closer to your rear... traffic ahead moves... OK time to go: Let off the brake, start to roll backwards, hit the gas... and... bog, stall. Everyone starts honking as you restart the car and cross the intersection just before the light turns red (screwing everyone behind you).

After that... suddenly, I feel like I'm in my teens again.
