Self-driving cars? I don't get it. Just take the bus.

I don't get it either but a great deal of effort is going into self driving cars. I wonder where that's going if it's going to be a success or a smoking crater in the ground.

I read about a recent study on accidents involving self-driving cars, since by law ALL accidents of this nature must be recorded in a centralized database for statistical/study purposes, and EVERY SINGLE accident was caused by a human driver in another vehicle who wasn't following either the laws or courtesy of the road. I just don't see self-driving cars as being viable as long as the general (idiot) human population is also driving on the same roads.
On a personal note, I'm not interested in being a passenger in a self-driving car. I really don't even like being a passenger in a vehicle driven by another person, be it car, plane, train or whatever. |

i see it getting HUGE for the trucking industry and the uber/lift/taxi business. possibly couriers too(if they could figure out how to load unload stuff). unfortunately, this will cost us MANY jobs, but companies will look to the bottom-line if they are deemed safe for road use.
on a related topic, has anyone thought about the implications of musk's hypertube for the freight business? i can't see people feeling safe traveling that fast in a tube! |

Sure, I'll go for a self driving car....
As soon as the manufacturers can guarantee that the software is 100% bug free and the hardware won't fail.....

Well, we humans are not 100% bug free and will most definitely fail, so as long as self driving cars are statistically better than humans, I don't have a problem with them for those that want them. To that point, I always want to retain the ability to drive myself. I realize it's a privilege, not a right, but I would not be happy with some kind of gov mandate saying all road going cars must be self driving.

it was my fault that deer jumped out if front of your car, sorry.
do self driving cars see pot holes? do they see drunks swerving towards you from adjacent streets/sidewalks/allies? to work correct it would have to be ALL self driving in a contained environment. i like driving. fooie and pshaw to self driving. |
