Clutch life
I'm almost wondering if I need to have my transmission looked at.
Sometimes when I release the clutch after shifting, the car sort of jerks. This happened today in 3rd and 4th gear. After I parked, went in the store, and drove again, it did not do it. Also, my transmission grinds 90% of the time going into 3rd gear. Any thoughts? |

I'm starting to think that they don't build clutches/manuals like they used to. My 2000 Accord Sedan still shifts silky smooth at almost 200,000 miles - with the original stock transmission and clutch. But, on the flip side, the power windows in that car have been the bane of my existence.

^^ I agree. I see reports of different cars all the time with "my clutch is dead at 30K" from drivers who have driven manuals for years.
Also, where is the catch point supposed to be on the Yaris? I'd say that mine is in the last half of the release. |

I have a 2014 Yaris that I just bought last September... 1rst and 2nd have already been replaced. And now my 3rd gear is doing the same. Plan on taking it in tomorrow to get that shit fixed!

Take your time shifting gears, get a weighted shift knob, press your clutch pedal all the way down! I've got 48k miles on my Yaris and still drives like it's brand spankin new.

There do seem to be people ratting out their clutch who say they have reliable experience using them.
Perhaps theres a problem in manufacutre because so few manuals get made nowadays. But also we have to face the possibility that its driver induced. I do know the drive by wire change from drive by cable actuated throttle on two of my cars is a LOT less capable of smooth transitions from stop to start with an aitomatic transmission. I have to imagine that would play hell with a clutch...

In this instance it's not the driver. Anytime I'm driving at 3000 rpm's or higher, it grinds no matter how far the clutch is pressed.
If I'm shifting lower than 3000 rpm's, the problem doesn't occur. Also, if I'm down shifting into 3rd it does not grind. |

Its common in this car. Possibly the worst clutch I have ever owned and all of my cars have been stick. From the day I picked it up brand new from the dealer I had intermittent problems when the car was cold it would shutter like crazy taking off from first. I blamed it on the electronic throttle but apparently many people had this issue. Also, when I've been on the track with it, winding it up to the top of the power band and shifting into 3rd it would grind going into the gear for a split second. The clutch is fine and I'm at 100k km's now but it still is the worst clutch I have ever owned in my lifetime. I won't replace it until it is toast but when I do it will not be OEM. That's for sure.

Toyota said that the reason 3rd gear is grinding is because of a bad Trans axel. Nothing having to do with the driver.

The transaxle combines the functionality of the transmission, the differential, and associated components of the driven axle into one integrated assembly.
In my case, my transaxle had somehow chipped on the inside. And those chips had been lodged in between my gears, which was causing the grinding. The mechanic said that he sees this a lot among the Yaris's. |

I had the same symptoms you had with my 1st transmission. I know what the transaxle does.....just wanted to know more details of your situation. I plan on tearing my now spare transmission down and putting in different 5th and driven gears however now it sounds like it may require a complete teardown instead and I could run into the issue again. I guess it may be smarter to start looking for the TRD 6 speed and modding that instead.

For me going to that TRD trans could be a downgrade due to ratios. I would have to modify it too. Afaik the only way to get one is to buy a half cut so be prepared for that if you get serious about it.

^This is good advice. Also, regular maintenance on the trans fluid.

Best purchase I made was the TRD Quick short shift kit. It made a world of difference and most shops charge about an hours labor to install it. BTW I've heard good things about the MicroImage short shift Kit. and somewhere there is the DIY Post instructions. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-Yaris...item27fed69c5c |
