Bumper material>?

Does anyone know particularly what material our bumper is made of? Curious as to doing a self repair not sure if bondo will work so I was going to sodder on plastic to it of the same kind sand it down and repaint.

What do you mean hot air sealed it? You mean torch it with heat and melt it together?

Bondo fibreglass body filler is what I managed to find is this the correct one for this?

???? If it's ABS plastic, you may be able to fix it with ABS pipe cement. Find it in the plumbing section of the hardware store next to the PVC cement. Find an inconspicuous spot on the back side of the bumper, clean it off with some fine grit sand paper and put a drop of glue on. If you can't chip it off when it dries, it should do the trick.

Is that stuff better than the bondo fibreglass repair kit? Apparently our bumper covers are normal plastic said kaotic?

Yeah but what's "normal plastic"? PETE, PVC, HDPE, ABS, UHMWPE, etc.?

I would suspect it's ABS, but I don't know for sure.

I believe Bondo and other body fillers are polyester resins or something of the like. It's very difficult to get them to stick to many plasics beyond a mechanical bond (forming in around scratches from rough sanding or making "plugs" through holes drilled in the plastic) which will eventually come apart on anything that flexes around much or expands and contracts with heat. The ABS cement will make a chemical bond.

Of course, you'll still need to figure out if your bumper is ABS or not.

And keep in mind that their fiberglass products are most likely going to be polyester resins, maybe some epoxy resins, both of which won't bond to many plastics like ABS without some sort of special process like corona flame treatment.

Not PVC glue. ABS cement. ABS cement is ABS plastic in a solvent which evaporates and leaves the ABS plastic behind. It will take paint just as well as the rest of the part if done properly.


And again, this is all assuming the part is ABS to begin with.

bondo sells body filler and fiberglass products. the body filler will not work as it is not structural, the fiberglass is.

the idea about pvc glue is a good one but I wouldn't put it on the front of the bumper as I don't know if it would accept the paint well. been a while since I messed with PVC.

live with it for a while, slap a sticker on it that says "ouch", then save up and buy a new bumper or a front lip since it may cover that up..a self fix for most people is not a good idea especially with a crack like that..

They sell a two part plastic epoxy made for bumper repairs, I've used it(in several location on my Yaris) and so far so good. It's available at your local autoparts store(usually).

I don't recall the exact brand, but it's one of these two part plunger types. Surface prep is especially important...And it's fine for a bandaid type fix IMO, it will be tough to make it invisible.

was doing some searching. I don't like being wrong (and I was, thanks dingbat) so here is an attempt at redemption

found a thread on benzworld that said to use jb weld. I don't have personal experience with it but I guess it makes sense. I would still do it on the back to try it out but it is simple enough.

Alright will return my bondo shit, and look for JB weld, where there is JB weld there should be other repair products will go for the better lookin one. I also already have sand paper and clear paint just need the can of my 1E7 from dupli color thanks guys will report back

The problem(in this application) with JB is how rigid it is, when that bumper flexes the JB will separate from the plastic. You need something specifically designed for plastic, so it will flex with the surrounding material. I'm tryin to find the exact epoxy I used to fix a two foot crack on the bottom of my current bumper, the best part was the applicator tip was spiraled, by the time te two part mix reached the bottom it was thoroughly mixed and ready to fill. On mine I backed the crack with boat hull repair epoxy(I'm still worried about it's rigidity) then filled the crack with the liquid epoxy. I've scraped that same spot at least a half dozen times since the repair and it hasn't budged...only time will tell.

Yeah I want to avoid it snapping again and possibly even taking more plastic with it this time, I hit snow alot here in winter even when I go through clear roads so I want somethingnthat will work.
