because it is cnn, and they realize they have zero cred, so they think by mentioning cr, which also has zero cred, someone might actually believe them.

I do have to agree with the article on it not being recommended due to performance. TheYaris is very weak when accelerating and climbing hills due to its 106 HP engine.

it's a cheap, dependable car made for high mpgs, not performance.

I agree. People wants to judge the Yaris on what it is not, instead of what it is. All things considered I believe that the Yaris is one of the best values for a new car.

The yaris does pretty good for a small car with a 106 hp engine,
I Think my self it is pretty impressive for what it is,
'' the Yaris is very weak '' you must have down graded from a hot rod or
Porsche to say that.
I recall consumer Reports reason for not recommending it was mostly
do to crash test performance.

I find the 106HP engine peppy and it provides all the power I needed 95% of the time. The 5% (that didn't work) came when I needed speed right now.

Or, maybe the Yaris is what a Yaris is. And the truth hurts sometimes.

I was just saying that it's true that the performance sucks, that's all. I like the value you get out of it and the mileage savings, but that's about it. Oh, and I do like the way it looks.

Critical dislikes have not included the Yaris's speed. In fact, since the Yaris came out, it's one of the quickest cars in its class. Surprised? It's true. And critics only compare with competition. They don't demerit the Yaris because it doesn't do what a Camry does.
The Yaris 106 HP is more than adequate for this class. Others may have a little more power, but they are still slower.

The Yaris's main failures (according to the auto press) is...

- numb electric steering feel (I personally love the feel and performance )
- overall lack of driving feel and performance (non-speed related)
- seating position/comfort
- steering wheel too far away (no telescoping)
- before later safety upgrades, 2007-2008 models were criticized for the lack of standard side airbags, ABS, stability control, ect..

Because it drives like crap, lacks some fairly basic standard features on the base model, has a high price tag with some basic options, and has a Fisher Price interior.

If you want an A to B car, the Yaris might be it.

If you want a car with "soul", look anywhere else.

You just mentioned 3 things I love about my Yaris.

Who the hell wants a computer driving their car for them? I know I don't...

Well I guess that means only 2 since it's hard to criticize a side airbag. They're pretty damn useful. But still. ABS and traction control are computers attemping to make up for american's inability to sufficiently operate the cars they own. I don't blame Americans though because even a mentally handicapped person who can't speak english can pass the driver's test sadly.

There's a reason the best roads, the best drivers, and the best cars are found in Europe. /endtangent

edit: Also i'm with jumpman on this one. seems like firemachine woke up one day to a yaris in his driveway and hates his life for it...

I suppose it depends on what one wants from a car. For the need I had when I purchased it, it has fit the bill perfectly and then some. Though I'm not clear on what "basic standard features" are missing from an entry level base model car.

As for performance, I'm not the type to want speed (whats the point of having a fast car on roads with a speed limit?) so that's a non-issue for me.

I have a Jeep for when I need power and traction, and I have the Yaris for everyday trips, good mpgs and for hella fun driving the twisty mountain roads. I'm happy with the Yaris and of all of the cars I've owned in my lifetime it's second only to my Jeep in terms of favoritisim.

Sorry you don't like yours.

Mine has been a fantastic car in the 2.5 years and 50K miles I've had it. Never needing any repairs and I could not say that about two previous Toyotas I owned from new nor any other car I purchased new. I love the fuel ecomony averaging 45 with mostly gentle freeway travel. The only car I like slightly more is the new to America Mazda 2, but it's a/c is no where near as good as the toyota's, I just like the looks and handling better.
