There's a couple schools of thought. One is to run high quality synthetic and change once per year. Another is to run normal grade oil and change every 3 months. In the US, oil is so cheap, a lot of us use synthetic. I dont think a Yaris motor cares either way.

I loose track of all the arguments myself. I mostly just use whatever quality dino oil is on sale with regular change intervals. The grade should be printed on your oil cap.

I do believe that there are advisements against switching to synthetic on older high milage engines. If this is true, given yours is 11 years old, it may warrant digging deeper into this thought.

A synthetic 10w-30 should be fine for your car, change every 10,000kms or once a year.

the only real arguments against switching to synthetic in older vehicles is because it will break down anything built up anywhere in the engine, and those build ups could be around something that would leak. So changing to synthetic you would all of a sudden find every single leak that would have been hidden using non synthetic oil.

Now whether that is actually a bad thing or not is another story.

still different reasons so far.....i had read about mineral vs sythetic......anyway. my haynes book about yaris it tells me to fill 0w30 or 5w30....which for my country in summer i think is too thin, cause of very high temperatures, still on the cap of my car, i doesnt says what oil should i give.

I used to be an Amsoil Dealer and if the owners manual has a chart showing recommendations, go by that, it is what they test their engines with. I run 5w-30 synthetic in Yaris and 10w-30 synthetic in my Tundra, changing it out around 7,500 miles, but the real key is to use the best filter possible! After seeing some recent filter cut-away tests, the Toyota OEM is your best choice, but K&N and Royal Purple make a great filter also, just more expensive than OEM.

Walmart: 5w30 Mobil 1 Synthetic 5 quart container= $25

Good for at least 5000 mile intervals. This car doesn't require much thought when it comes to oil.

Just realized you're not in the USA, but still food for thought for people stateside.

That is because there is no definitive answer. Most veterans of this forum roll their eyes whenever yet another oil question is raised and move on. Hence the reason this post is only the 7th reply.
